Anyone have a vehicle with a little higher ground clearance than my Stratus they are willing to rent/loan for a day trip to Indy? I can pay with Bacon ... and ammo.

Seriously, I might have to run down to Enterprise and see what they have in their lot first thing in the morning. I have to try and get the kid home tomorrow or he loses his job. However, it will all depend on what is still shut down or open in the morning. If I can't retrieve him tomorrow, he's stuck until Friday when I get home from work. Stupid kid.

    Gotcha.

Hey ... I might need to borrow that as well.

    Sending a PM.

Bob, I never pulled it back out today because the drive was already clear...plus its effin' cold out. I will check tomorrow and see if I can figure it out. My neighbor looked at the auger and said it was still turning, but I didn't look personally. Either way I'll probably still return it and get the Toro, really disappointed that ANYTHING broke during the 2nd use.

If you sucked a branch into the impeller, anything will break, even if it's the second use.

I ventured out of my hovel today and found that society seems to have survived the ordeal. I had my pistol close just in case the people had turned into feral bands of roaming savages. My fears were put to rest as I was greeted at the Walgreens with a hearty welcome.

    Life will find a way....

I'm disappointed. You didn't get my driveway.

    Hello everyone, I'm back.
I'll try to better on my typing. Tired and a tablet were not working out together.
I'm still making mistakes, but easier to see and correct.

    Trip back home.
Some emergency, I ran my cell phone as a recorder so I could keep up. I thought I could just count in my head, but the streets were busy. So much for the emergency.

    Anyway.
in 8 miles, 18-20 minute trip. 11:15 PM to just after 11:30 PM.
75 cars on the road. This is cars on the road, pulling on or off. Doesn't include people in parking lots at open businesses.

Of those 75, 1 was a police, 1 was a tow truck with car, and 1 was a pickup truck with snow blower.

    16 businesses open.
I wasn't recording at first, so I can't remember a couple. But of the 16, there were
    7 gas stations.
    2 payday loan
    1 bail bondsman
    1 BBQ/Ribs
    1 Sharks (fish)
    1 White Castle

Boy did I get lucky. I got to my car, was expecting a horror story.
Apparently they had cleared around my car, maybe with a Bobcat.

We're looking at the north side of the vehicle. The wind must have scoured it clear, cause I doubt anyone was a nice guy and cleared it for me. It's been in the lot since around 1 PM Sunday.

The front, on the east side.
    20140106_230529_zps68f7c1db.jpg

Didn't look too bad. Till I found out the ice was that super-ice that doesn't want to scrape off.
Fortunately, I was just smart enough to put my blades up before going in to work Sunday.

    And the south side.
    20140106_230724_zps4c189e6a.jpg

    More of that super-ice.

All in all, it was a LOT better than I expected.
Of course, the north doors were frozen. I had to punch the doors around the edges to break the ice, then a couple punches to the door handle.

Oh, and wow was I lucky I decided to get that new battery on the 31st. Cause even with the new battery, it was a bit of a slow start at first.

One problem with the ski goggles, they are tinted to help with snow glare.
Unfortunately, at night, they kinda cut down on the vision.
But I was comfy walking the long walk. A couple changes, and I'd have been happy walking home.
Forgot change of socks. My feet/socks were wet from work. My non-work boots was keeping me warm, but in the long run, I needed a change to my wool hiking socks with my wicking hiking socks.
Another set of long johns on the legs would have been nice. Not needed for a trip of <1 mile.
And finally, better gloves. I gave my best gloves away last year, to a Salvation Army bell ringer. It was my good deed. Unfortunately, they were my best gloves.

    Morning peeps.

WD if you need a ride to Indy I am (planning to) drive right through there this afternoon. But I'm not coming back home, I'm going on my way to North Carolina with Melen. I should be home Friday if you want to wait for the return trip. But I-65 is closed again, so at this point not sure if I will go. I did venture out last night, in both vehicles. The 4x4 Touareg and the front wheel drive Jetta. Jetta slipped and slid on the road, Touareg was sure footed. Was planning to drive the Jetta to N.C. because it gets about 50mpg on the highway with diesel fuel and I can make it there on 1 1/2 tanks of fuel. Looks like I'll be taking the Touareg, which sucks gas and costs a bundle to drive.

Larry, nice to see you got out of your prison. When does parole end?

When you say Amtrak is a "NO GO" is that law or policy?
I think I found the answer.

Here's the text of the Amtrak firearms policy:

    Firearms in Checked Baggage
The Departments of Transportation and Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2010, enacted into law on December 16, 2009, requires Amtrak to implement the procedures necessary to provide storage and carriage of firearms in checked baggage cars and at Amtrak stations that accept checked baggage, within one year of the bill’s enactment. This requirement applies solely to checked baggage, not carry-on baggage.

Amtrak’s current policy prohibits all firearms, ammunition and other weapons aboard its trains. This includes any being carried on the person, in carry-on baggage or in checked baggage. Please be advised that this policy remains in effect until Amtrak begins firearm carriage service by December 2010.

Now I'm even more confused, it sounds like the goverment made amtrak change there "policy" by in acting a law. So it sounds to me it's still a policy not law to carry on you.

Standby on that. If my son is still down there on Friday, he might need a ride home. He's looking at Amtrak but the Chicago bound trains were sold out through Thursday (as of last night).

Confusing but I think their current policy allows carry-on firearms in checked baggage ... I think.

Looks like I-65 is still closed.

Apparently I'm not going to North Carolina today.

    I know. I saw that.

You could take 41 to 52 in to Indy. That's what I have to do for work if 65 is closed.

It's not just about "getting around" the closures on I65. I don't want to endanger myself or anyone else because of road/weather conditions. (I have the gear and training for this weather but I don't want to put it to the test.) I would want to know the road conditions on those secondary roads before setting out on this venture. Also, does State of Emergency mean that the secondary roads are closed as well even if nobody is there to enforce the closure?

Yeah, but school can wait a couple of days. She is actually not going to miss any classes if we get there a day, two or even 3 days late. Its a sorority thing that she will miss. And I can understand her being upset about missing it, but its pretty much out of my hands at this point. She has more luggage than she can take on an airplane, so that option is out too. We literally came home with a FULL CAR of stuff, she has even more to take back down there.

I'd rather wait for the roads to open up and get there ALIVE than to fight nature and die, just to get to a sorority party.

Standby on that. If my son is still . . .
Let's stay in touch, at some point I'm going to Wake Forest University to return Melen to college, so at some point I'm returning home, and coming right through Indy. Just have no clue what day that will be.
