LOL, this reminded me of a conversation I had with my 10 year old son last year when he came home from school and told me about the lesson they received on the civil war and slavery. The typical history written by the victor stuff. I then spent several days actually educating him and making sure he didn't repeat the facts to his teachers for fear of poor grades and reprisal.

I have seen rebel flags used for avatars and in pics that are posted at various places within this site. Help me out with this...does this mean we have a bunch of "rebels" against the norms of society in general, or racists?

As we know this flag is a powerful symbol with significant historical meaning related directly to slavery. Do the rebel flag posters know this? Just trying to be cool? Ignorant of the past? Hateful individuals? In many ways this flag is not that different than a german swaztika which I hope many would be opposed to seeing on this site for obvious reasons.

This pretty much sums up the attitude of most americans .......

You have the right to do , write , or say whatever you want within the law according to THE BILL OF RIGHTS .......

AS long as I don't find it offensive

I guess Barry Obama said it best when he said

There's nothing wrong with a person being proud of where their family came from. I personally don't fly a confederate flag, but i'm not saying that i'm not proud of my anncestors fighting for the csa. It's what they believed in, and there's nothing wrong with standing up for what you believe in.

In all reality, the Confederate flag represents what 99% or more of us on this forum believe in. The stigmata that our inept education system has falsely placed upon the flag and the fact that most don't know what it means as a result is the only reason it is met with resistance. Had we been taught the truth in school, we would ALL embrace it. American people of ALL colors would proudly display it.

While I agree with you on your posting, I think that is another debate all in itself (education system and lack of it). I encourage you all to read a few books breaking down the civil war, and even read a few about Lincoln during the war, it will enlighten you on the subject.

Once again, please show me the facts. I really want to know where you are getting this information from. I personally don't have a problem with the rebel flag....I'm sort of indifferent. But this attitude that the Civil War had "little to do with slavery" is completely unfounded. You guys simply must start backing up your statements....sources please.
want facts? ok go look up when the flag was first used? then read what the war was really about! It didnt happen like they taught us in schools it started when the north started telling the south what to do and when they will do it. Read your history and then you will understand. It only got that stigma when the stupid cross burning bigots started using it. Go look it up and educate your self. Im not able to do it for you. You can only lead a horse to water but you cant make him drink

True...but don't get me wrong, I'm in no way attacking our educators, rather the governmental system within which they work and the curriculum/agenda they must work with. I was fortunate enough to have what I consider the best American history teacher ever when I attended school in Bloomington. He often went outside the lines drawn for him and led us to the truth letting us come to the conclusions on our own. Things like this, and hemp as a cash crop by our nations founding fathers (as well as their "harvest parties"), hallucinogens causing the witchcraft trials(mold in the wheat and rye storage bins).....etc... Mr.Walsh, the brother of our principal.

:yesway:Correct sir....I screwed that one up. Thanks guys. Honest mistake. I am no history buff. I just fail to see how slavery had "little to do with the civil war."
if you are no history buff then how can you come in here and tell everyone your not convinced the flag wasnt a racist symbol?I dont understand where you are coming from it like me making a post that says the 460 weatherby is the be all end all gun.

yep..because everyone knows the north had no slaves..nor did they make those slaves fight. and never did the north say "if you fight we'll give your freedom" and then stick them on the front lines. everyone knows it was only the south that did all of that.
the war was going pretty hot and heavy before the slavery issue was ever REALLY aknowledged.

you guys crack me up. saying that slavery wasnt a main cause of the civil war....lolz then as a defense this link was posted, (not that i think this is some end-all source):
Top Five Causes of the Civil War

and notice how much slavery figures into the "top 5 reasons." yes, it was a "States' Rights" thing. and yes there were other issues such as tariffs, etc, but slavery was far and away the lightening rod. remember what actually caused the southern states to succede? the election of Lincoln. and why was that? because he was anti-slavery.

i can say that in my experience, there is a LOT of racism in Indiana, much more than i ever experienced in Ohio (and yes,i realize there are racists everywhere...i just see more of them here). the flag itself may not stand for slavery.
buti am pretty sure most of the confederate flag bearers, at least when i see them in muncie, are just racist hillbillies. and i have met plenty of those.

The Stars N Bars has nothing to do with slavery that`s revisionist history. The civil war wasa about states rights. I have one hanging on the wall behing me, another in the living room, one on the front of the Harley ( I`ve had that one since 1972) one on the front of the Blazer and a few mor laying around. Like I`ve said on other forums my southern roots resent my Yankee birth.

I know a few guys that fly it on their vehicles, or that fly it at their house, normally right along the stars and stripes. For most of them its more a symbol of being a country boy, redneck, or just loving their country/heritage. Also alot of them would rather be kinda wild and carefree like the south wanted, and not have all the excessive control we have today, or what they felt the North had at that time. I normally fly the stars and stripes, and the Navy Jack flag. But have been thinking about also getting a Gadsen to put in there, and sometimes rotate out a Confederate flag as well. Cause I myself would much rather have our freedom back like the south wanted at that time, and not all this politically correct, liberal left wing, socialist control we have today. I'd much rather go back to our freedoms as said in the Constitution. And just so you know, I'm one of the least racist people you will ever meet. I don't have a problem with people of any race and have friends of all colors and backgrounds. Only when you give me a reason to not like you, will I do so.:twocents:

I'd rather see the real general lee and not all jacked up like that. But I love the ole Dukes. And at least a couple times a week at work I'll give out a loud rebel yell when its time to go. Just like Bo normally did when they jumped the General. :rockwoot:
