As I stated in my post the title was to gain attention to the shooting

Also since im 19 and just out of high school with a elementary school aged sister, it hits me hard that innocent children were slaughtered

OK, I can be a little more understanding under the circumstances. We can't expect the maturity of a 50 year old. As for the impact of the murders, I would say that this applies to anyone who isn't a sociopath. We would all love to find a way to stop this type of thing from happening, but you have to keep in mind that criminals, by definition, are people who disregard the law. Making more laws to prevent them from doing things that are already illegal won't work and leaves the rest of us at an even worse disadvantage. It is also impossible to illegalize mental illness, and if it were, it would degenerate into a political reliability test rather than a device to identify the criminally unstable. The unfortunate truth is that it is not possible to eradicate evil from the world and violating the rights of the people will not change that--it simply enlarges the victim class. I can understand your sentiment. We are still left with the truth that there is absolutely nothing you can do with the gun laws that would have changed anything other than repealing them so that some responsible adult could have eliminated this threat before he killed a couple dozen people, mostly young children.

I will leave you with this:

Try telling the parent of a child that this "hits you harder" than them.

Blowing off steam, ranting, etc. Does no good. No matter the age, it's self-indulgent and unhelpful.

Just what "must be done"? Rational responses with concrete suggestions. Leave the emotionality for those directly involved. If you have something positive to suggest, please do. Otherwise, ranting out of frustration is just an exercise in futility.

We should all be able to express an opinion here, regardless of how ridiculous it may be - as long as it is in good taste and topical.

We really need to understand what made this dude snap. The gun was just a tool. Were there no signs that this was going to happen?

He does indeed do well for 16. I am 39 and learned a few things from him in conversation over dinner. He is not only mature, especially for his age, but studies things well, and is particularly knowledgeable about combloc weapons in addition to simply being a great person.
