buddy of mine has a all stock 1968 302 Camaro with 32,000 on it in his garage......rode in it in the mid 80's and yes 8k rpm sounds great side ways in 3rd gear!!!!:)
A good friend of mine also has a 68 z28. His is not all stock though, he bought it in 1971 with a rod knock. He does have two 302's for it though, the original and a factory replacement block with zero miles on it. It's lived most of its life with a 327 in it, he's just now finishing installing a 400ci Dart crate engine.

Those 302s could rev like blenders.

My understanding is that the 302 came about because of a desire to go SCCA Trans Am Racing, which had a 5L displacement limit. GM has a 283 (too small) and a 327 (too big) in the stable.

Realizing that the 283 crank in the 327 block produced just the right displacement, GM homologated the 302 and went racing with the massively oversquare little V8.

We were building these in the 60's.
Small journal 327's with 283 cranks in them.
A set of 64cc chamber fuelie heads and the right manifold/headers with a Duntov 50/50 solid bump stick. Serious RPMs in a light car like a 64 through 67 Nova.
3 peddles and it was magic. 7,500 R's will bring out a smile.

Yes....the Chevy and Ford 302 was a result of rules in the series.

Not many know this, Pontiac designed a 303ci engine to go in the 69 Trans Am so they could get in on that action. Redline at 8k. Estimated as many as 25 were ever built. I think they proved unreliable and with the lift of the 5.0 limit in '70, they scrapped it.

Bought a 1968 Cougar XR7-G this summer. It was a Rent-A-Racer out of Hertz at the Atlanta airport. I am pulling the engine and trans next week to go through them. I will also be going through the engine bay while it is out.

It looks a lot better in the pictures. It is rust free, but everything will need to be gone through.

Very cool! Always liked those way better than the Mustangs. When I was a "young boy", when I still played video games, I had a 67 Cougar in one of my favorite racing games. There were better cars, but I liked that one. Was white with a black top.

What engine that have in it?
