    AR means Armalite

The types of rifles we purchase, non class-3, are simply rifles. "Semi-automatic Rifles", if you want to be more specific.

"Assault Rifles" are capable of full-auto fire, and are more attributed to the military-style rifles.

thanks. Sorry it took me a while to get to the party....

The term "assault rifle" implies selective fire. It's incorrect. An actual legally-purchased selective-fire assault rifle has never been used to commit a murder in U.S. history.

But, Piers Morgan doesn't hesitate to use the term. He can say the made-up "assault weapon" all he likes... but saying "assault rifle" is completely false.

Not even the Tommy Gun that was selective fire and sold legally in the 20' and 30's.....?

The shooter was a TSA agent? Where is that stated?
    Unconfirmed reports from LA Times.....

Not even the Tommy Gun that was selective fire and sold legally in the 20' and 30's.....?
    Nope.
That is a "Machine Pistol" because of the barrel length and the removable butt stock.
The first "Assault Rifle" is considered to be the Sturmgewehr MP-44 produced by the Germans toward the end of WWII.
It was a carbine length rifle that fired an intermediate cartridge and was selective fire.

Ignorance isn't a sin. Education can correct it. A couple of additions to what GPIA7R said:

Assault rifle has a proper definition and indeed is capable of full-auto fire. Civilians can own them, but with significant expense and restrictions. Those are called Class 3 and are controlled via the National Firearms Act. They start in the thousands if you have any interest. INGO has a full section for such weapons: Class III (NFA).

Anti-gun politicians and the media have adopted the term "assault weapon" since they've been corrected so often on "assault rifle". Assault weapon does not have any real definition, so it has proven useful to them as a way to confuse the public about the difference (like how you were confused). It has been used as a way to stigmatize ARs and other rifles that we would commonly use by confusing them with machine guns. Using that more flexible term is the kind of thing that results in restrictions based on things like: size of magazine, pistol grips, flash hiders, etc. that have nothing to do with how deadly a gun really is.

When I clicked on the link in post 28 the live report, the anchorman was saying the shooter was TSA ..

We better hope its true. The LAST thing we need is for this to be some anti-gov nutjob.... Who, of course, will have legal firearms.

Saying 2nd armed suspect is in custody - I'd stay sceptical on that for now.

A shotgun in a locked-down airport in the most heavily regulated state in the Union? Time for everyone to blame the NRA and AR-15s, then.

You mean we can't blame the TSA for being a worthless yet invasive waste of taxpayer money?

^ A TSA agent was the shooter. Once again, similar to the Dorner murders, the people that are supposed to protect Kalifornians are the ones doing the shooting. Those poor sheeple are heading for the slaughter, and they don't even see the writing on the wall. I bet those idiots even create more anti-gun laws just because of this. Soon the 'SS' and cartels will be the only ones armed, and Kalifornia will be just like Mexico.

you gonna hit the town and celebrate, some of you guys love this stuff

Sounds like an anti gov nut job. He left a note in his bag stating he wanted to kill TSA and pigs.

thanks. I clearly know the difference between, semi auto and auto. I just didn't know that assault rifles were fully auto only.

Its probably better the the media calls an AR-15 an assault riffle... As soon as they call it a semi auto rifle, then semi auto handguns become "just as dangerous" as they draw the similarity....

CNN now reporting the shooter was 23 old man with anti-government material in his bag. Previous reports of him being a TSA employee was wrong.
So he was probably a mentally ill person who like other mass shooters has a medically diagnosed history of mental illness and medicL professionals and law enforcement did nothing about it. Yawn

Here is a photo from the people taking cover in the Airport. Man I'd hate to resort to hiding in a stall… Not to mention that this is likely the WORST place to hide, look at the sitting ducks.

Run and Hide, doesnt' mean lock yourself in a corner and wait to die.

"The gunman, identified by law-enforcement officials as 23-year-old Paul Anthony Ciancia, was shot by law enforcement and taken into custody in critical condition. The motive is not clear but it's believed he had anti-government views based on written materials he was carrying, the officials said."

I'd prefer the crapper over a room with a copier pushed in front of the door. Mostly because it would be rude to take a dump on the floor in front of the other folks cowering in a corner.
