Then what more can be done? Does it really mean anything if "America" apologizes, when the people who actually owe apologies are either dead or won't admit it?

    Symbolism without substance is worthless.

In the sense that you mean it, yes, it is worthless. But to those who gain power and wealth from dividing Americans, pitting them against each other and keeping us distracted from the real issues and their criminal acts, this controversy is a continuous supply of what they need.

Bernie seems to have given an off the cuff answer and it wasn't all that bad as far as politicians go, yet it has generated 80 or so responses here. I would think that might be relevant if it was a discussion among people who actually intend to vote for him, but it sure seems like a waste of electrons in this forum.

We're not exactly discussing the fact that he said it as much as the philosophy behind the sentiment. It seems to be particularly relevant given our recent discussions on the concept of national shaming.

Shouldn't Bernie be ashamed of being a self-identified socialist who effectively wants to enslave everyone to the government? When does he apologize for everything he's done to make that happen? Oh, wait. He thinks that's a good thing.

Careful. We may be in the presence. I know you've all thought it. I'm just going to come out and put it in printed words. Alpo *IS* Bernie Sanders. There. I said it.

I like it when politicians make off the cuff statements. You tend to get more honesty and Freudian slips than when they issue prepared remarks. In this case, we see that Sanders is pandering to a demographic he is losing. We also see he gets himself bogged down in populists issues that have nothing to do with being the chief executive of a government. In that respect, he is like most candidates. But he can't fix a 150 year old crime, and it shows bad judgement to try to do so.

You could learn from these people.

Were we to compare and contrast your people to the Democrat presidential candidates for the last 30-40 years, people would say, "Sith Lords? Meh, not so bad." You guys need to up your evil game if you want to keep pace.

You may be on the first train to the GULAG. Along with most of the INGO old-timers.

Actually, we get a bad rap. It's that ****ing Darth Sidious' fault. He learned that lightening thingy and just had to show it off. Not to mention, of course, the whole "ruling the universe" thing. Really, we just want to be left alone.

    I really don't care myself.

But.... you think these guys should drop it?
WWII: American POWs Still Waiting for an Apology

I think the comparison/contrast is interesting. Let me see if I can maintain some consistency and answer this. I think if the actual vets or their immediate survivors seek an apology, then they have that right. The people to seek it from are their captors, and as stated earlier, those folks aren't necessarily crawling out of the woodwork to volunteer. The government which held the pow's is defunct, replaced by a new one that had nothing to do with the war. The companies who employed them as slaves might apologize, but they are also run by a whole new set of executives who had nothing to do with the crimes. As a corporation is a legal figment, it is difficult to coerce an apology from a piece of paper. But Japan is a different place than it was 10-15 years ago, and while these guys can try, you can't get blood out of a turnip.

By the way, as Sith always operate in pairs, who is your apprentice? And if you don't have one, are you accepting applications?

I listen to the Thom Hartman show on the Progressive satellite radio channel on a somewhat regular basis. Ol' Bernie has a call in segment every Friday titled 'Lunch with Bernie.'

After hearing his comments in that show over and over again it is apparent he has a pretty standard set of responses or platitudes to any question or comment. He constantly refers to the millionaires and billionaires, the banksters, and the radical right wing agenda. I'm not at all surprised at his position on this issue as he seems to pander to the racial minorities. I believe his playbook is identical to those who wish to pit white against black against Hispanic - lower income against upper income (because the middle class has all but been eradicated).

Hartman is cut from the same cloth ( or vic versa ) in his beliefs about all the same topics and political agenda. If the Republican and Democrat "candidates" are drawing this much discussion now I can't wait for another 16 months of this ! !

Why was there a collective apology/payout, to Japanese internment camp prisoners? Why does the federal govt still support Indian reservations? I've never killed an Indian, and my parents weren't even alive during the war. Why are we subject to past ill behavior?

Wait. Are you invoking "reparations"? I thought that's a dog whistle.
