I'm not sure if I'd classify it as decency. I don't really know. I do think he's more honest and up front about his views, and, though his ideology is really ****ed up, he is surprisingly fair, for a progressive, about giving the other side their due.

But not knowing him well, and hearing him speak, it kept bugging me.... I know that voice. I've heard it before. A LOT!. Now where have I heard that voice before?

    Finally I remembered:

If the government wants to apologise for slavery, (which they supported up until, and even after, the Emancipation Proclamation and the War Between The States) then I say let them. It costs us nothing and will help one segment of our population heal from a generations long wounding. I see no real harm in it, as long as the apology from the government is sincere.

Maybe they could specially light up the White House?

Alabama 'Feeling the Bern' for Sanders | AL.com

A Sanders rally (he did not attend) in Birmingham, Alabama attracts a crowd of 300 people. I can't tell if that's a really good thing or really bad thing for him. (Warning: comments section on the article is a gold mine for some laughs, potentially NSFW language)

Good for him: 300 people attending a rally for him where he doesn't attend. Smack in the middle of one of the reddest states in the south, let alone the country. According to the article he has attracted a number of white Christians.
Bad for him: According to the article, not many African Americans attended the rally. Birmingham has a little over 200,000 people, of which almost 3/4ths are black. He seems to have a demographics issue that might have a chance to get better as time goes on.

Maybe some people choose not to heal. You keep picking at an open wound and it will never heal.

Well it seems pretty reasonable to think the whole "apology" thing is to address that.

    Is it working yet?

I was thinking more like "mental gymnastics."

If you've got a real definition for American Socialist, I'd be glad to read it.

By the way, Bernie got 71% of the vote in Vermont last time around. 65% 6 years before. It seems that republicans in Vermont like him even if people at this lat/long are a bit less thrilled.

Fair point, but some isn't all. I'd much rather, if someone has to have an apology, it be for the govt institutional discrimination many living people endured prior to the Civil Rights Movement taking hold.

If you cared, you would have already googled it.

But hey, as long as he can keep his "decent man" facade up, who cares what his plans are?

An apology is not picking at a wound. It's the application of salving words and thoughts.
I'm not referring to the apology as "picking at a wound" Like I posted before. There are some entities that are interested in picking at the wound to prohibit the healing. Apology or not. Do you honestly think an apology will make a difference?

See? That's the kind of comment that I would normally respond to on another site with aplomb and abandon. But, I won't here. Let's just say: Bless Yer Heart.

Do you think you are in a position to relate as to whether or not an apology would have an effect or not?

    Of course you won't.

But I'll bet that in two weeks, when you think of a snappy comeback, you'll slap yourself and say, "I wish I had thought of that two weeks ago!"

The only parties with the power to apologize are those who are guilty of the offense. Since those who are guilty of buying, selling, and owning slaves are dead, it is axiomatic that an apology by nonguilty parties would be of no effect.
