According to reports that I have read, something near 80% of gunshot victims survive, that being said, no calibre is exactly a death ray.

Unless I'm mistaken, there are no personal defense rounds manufactured or sold in .22 LR? Is the design of the cartridge reliable enough to warrant trusting it for self defense? Is a rimfire cartridge ever guaranteed to be 100% reliable?

I don't know about .22LR, but Hornady makes SD rounds for the .22Mag. I carry them in my NAA .22 revolver.

Everything being posted is true. But remember this guys. What we are talking about is not killing people but self defense. I personally have no desire to kill another person. My goal is to stop an attack as quickly as possible. That is the responsible thing to do. Stop the attack. Sub caliber guns do serve a purpose, but they are less effective for the stated purpose. It is always about compromises.

A .22 with the right round can be as effective as any other load. The big things I think about when I consider a carry gun are: will it work for what I need it to do? And, will I be able to make it work when I need it to work? Those two things are paramount to any personal protection/carry weapon.

And, if you have a .22 and that's all you've got, they are certainly the best you have in the moment, and more importantly, will be what you use to defend yourself. I firmly believe that the ability to handle and properly use the weapon is far more important than the caliber.

James Bond uses .32s and .380s usually. He might use 9mm now, though.
We're both wrong but you are somewhat more right than I am.

He first used a Beretta 418 (25 cal) From Casino Royale and used it up until he had to hand it into M in Dr No for his Walther PPK 7.65 mm (32 cal) but takes a 38 instead from that point on he is only using the 32, with a quick couple of exceptions such as when he uses a Long Barrell Colt in Gold Finger.

    Man the internet is cool!

IMHO .22 LR rounds are horrible choices for self-defense. Better than a typical BB gun and exceeding the power of a .25ACP (which can at least claim feeding reliability.) Still... It is better than nothing.

Stopped to have a beer at a local pub. While there, a friend introduced me to a lady who was throwing darts. She had a pair of "dimples" under her left eye, not under her right eye. She told us both that it was caused by a domestic with her ex: He shot her three times with a 22cal Beretta. She was throwing darts with her left hand and I noticed the end of her pinkie finger was gone. That was the third round impact in a defensive attempt to block the 22s. Although alive, scarred forever, mentally too.
The shooter is in jail. Finished one beer, left. Couldn't stick around afterwoods.

Neighbors shocked after 4 teens shot at Clearfield party

The kid was shot in the throat by a .22. The only damage was the entrance hole. The kid actually swallowed the bullet and doctors retrieved it from his stomach. Minor surgery and he was on the road to recovery, thank God.

    Something to consider.
And there was a kid In Detroit a few years ago who survived 3 close range blasts from a 12 gauge, one of which was to his head. Your point is invalid.
