Police/security will not submit an official report for escorting someone out of a concert, or a bar. I have been removed from a few establishments in my military days for turning up a little too much.

How many states require a FFL for private sales?

No idea, but that's not how a trace works. I can't just run the serial number and find out who the last FFL who sold it was.

Basically I get who the manufacturer shipped it to. That store (or the store's records if they are out of business) will know who they sold it to. Then I have to track down that person and see if they will tell me who they sold it to, then keep following the trail.

It's not totally unsubstantiated and unknown based on world history (Australia, GB)
and in general, when I have called 4473s a registration, "ingo" has shot it down... because I guess it being hard to use and on paper and incomplete makes it less of a registry. I argue it just makes it a poor one...

Because it isn't a registration, and digitizing paper records doesn't make it more of one.
