      Picking up a New Smith

I would advise against shooting 308 in this baby. Just sayin'

Recommend a good looking, $700 or less first revolver

You can get a 7 round S&W 686 plus with a 4 or 6 inch barrel for less than $700. See: Smith & Wesson Revolvers for sale at Buds, S&W

      Heard a rumor.

Um...not really. Some people really do prefer the single side safety. Plus, I suspect it is an option.

      Plinking pistol recommendation

One of the following: - a .22 conversion kit for your 1911 - a Ruger 22/45 A marvel precision unit 2 conversion will be right around $400 and a tactical solutions unit will be about $500. A Kimber conversion will be closer to $300.

      9mm or 40 for competition??

Once you have a ready supply of brass accumulated, 40 S&W will be about 3-4 cents more per round to reload than 9 MM. Of course, if you shop around for good deals on components, 45 reloads are only 5-6 cents more per round than 9 MM. That being said, if you are already reloading 45, you will...

      California and GSSF certificate

I do not know about the GSSF certificates but I doubt the dealer doing the transfer will accept the hi-cap mags.

1st CCW - err on the side of larger or smaller?

You are correct that the G19 would be the most versatile. However, given some of your parameters, I would suggest looking at thinner gun that is a bit larger than a thicker gun that is a bit smaller. Thus, the Kahr CW9 or TP9 would be the guns I would look at. The TP9 for example is 8+1, so...

      1911's

Value 1911 I consistently reccomend are the: Kimber Custom II Rock Island Tactical Citadel STI Spartan If it were my money, it would be the Spartan, first last and always.

      nano vs cm9

I posted a review of my CM9 here: https://www.indianagunowners.com/forums/handguns/154628-kahr_cm9_first_impressions.html?highlight= I have never shot or handled a Nano, but I would never buy one since it does not have a slide release. Plus, my CM9 and my regular carry gun (another Kahr) have...

The Return of the S&W 586!

One of these would look really nice next to my Model 19. The beefier full lug body-builder with its slimmer, more classically styled friend...

      Pistol Help

Limited to the 3 you listed, I would pick the XD. I already reload 45 and that would be the primary reason. Given my past Glock experience, the G20 would be tempting, though I would likely get a G21 if I wanted a big-bore Glock. I do not like Walther pistols because of the goofy mag release...

      what 22 to buy

The most important advantage that the SR2 has over the P22 is the slide on the SR22 is not made from zinc alloy. So the SR22 should be a lot more durable. Plus, the P22 has a simply terrible trigger, a terrible mag release and is not very accurate.

      what 22 to buy

Based on reviews, the SR22 is a nice piece, though I honestly have never shot one. I like the Browning Buckmark, the Ruger 22/45, the GSG 1911 and the S&W 22A. The 22A is a screaming deal and the 22/45 is the most easily upgraded. I have a lot of trigger time on the guns mentioned other than...

      what 22 to buy

The SR22 is a dramatically better gun than the P22.

      FN five-seven vs Keltech PMR-30

Yeah...I saw that. Looks interesting, but I would probably pass. If I were going to buy a pistol in .17 HMR, it would be for hunting or maybe silhouette shooting and I would get a revolver.

      Ruger LCR or J frame

The LCR seems like a nice piece, but a S&W model 442 is actually a bit cheaper. As is the 638, the 642 and the Bodyguard. So I would have to call it draw 'cause I sort of love Smith revolvers.
