...DETROIT — Ready for a tightrope walk?

General Motors and Ford Motor report third-quarter earnings and future guidance this week amid ongoing strikes and contract negotiations with the United Auto Workers union. And it’s a difficult balance.

If the automakers are bullish and exceed Wall Street’s expectations, it could fuel the union’s main argument that the companies can afford more concessions amid healthy profits — potentially prolonging the work stoppages and contentious talks.

But if the companies, which will likely include many caveats in any future comments, are too bearish on guidance or the impact of UAW efforts, they risk scaring Wall Street and denting their already discounted stock prices.

GM is expected to report third-quarter earnings of $1.88 per share before the bell Tuesday, while Ford is estimated to report earnings of 45 cents per share after markets close Thursday, according to average estimates compiled by LSEG, formerly known as Refinitiv.

While investors will surely note the third-quarter results, the real watcher is expected to be the effects of the UAW strike and negotiations on near-term earnings and longer-term plans of Ford and GM, as well as automaker Stellantis, which the union is also striking.

The union will be watching, too...

Can anyone confirm if this is fact or fiction? That sounds like socialism or outright theft.

The union has also demanded a 32-hour workweek (with pay for 40 hours); the right to strike over plant closures during the course of the next contract; and, in the event that an automaker does close a plant, provisions that would force the company to continue paying workers indefinitely to do community service.
Where is the mention of government involvement?

Folks can say Marxist/communist/ socialist and accuse people of such until they are blue in the face and I will say until the government is involved or the union is calling for government to be involved, it's inflammatory rhetoric.

Of course the definition of marriage got changed and I don't accept that either.

Perhaps you missed where our mentally retarded president was up on stage with the socialist/communist leader of the UAW. If that is not government involvement on the highest level, then I don't know what is.

If you think that is government involvement at its highest level then I don't know what to tell you.
Are you saying there is some yet unknown level of the government above the president of the US? Or are you saying that the president showing up with the socialist/communist head of the UAW is not the government getting involved?

I said I don't know what to tell you. I meant that. Your reply confirms it.

    OMG
It’s ridiculous, and obviously the companies would tell them to go **** a knotty pine. That’s the kind of **** you ask for when you’re not serious.

Stereotypes are often earned. Not because the behavior of all in the group have earned it. But some have.

Example: White people eat at Cracker Barrel. Well, they don’t all eat at Cracker Barrel and lots of non-white people eat there. But, if you eat at Cracker Barrel, you’re probably white. White people eat at Cracker Barrel in larger proportions than their representation in society.

Not all union members fit the stereotype. Most of the union people I worked with don’t.

The point I made that you replied to is that the behavior of some here tends to confirm the stereotypes. In other words, one would reasonably expect that a union member past or present, who denies the stereotype, would not behave like the stereotype.

The problem with stereotypes is that in order to become a stereotype the characteristic has to be true more often than not. That is how stereotypes work. But if it is true more often than not, does it just become a trait?

For example, I know UAW workers who are as an individual good people. I know this one guy at KTP, he is an awesome guy to have help you under the hood of your car, knows his stuff forwards and backwards. That same guy I would not trust at all if I was the one paying him. He is so into malicious compliance and spending more time trying to get out of doing the job he got bumped into than just doing the job.

Another buddy I have there, she is an amazing woman. Always the first to volunteer bringing a side dish to a BBQ. She is a truly kind individual. I would never ever hire her. She will straight up tell you that on Friday she works half speed with several other people, and they get that over time on Saturday.
