Copper can't be mined fast enough to electrify the US

Copper cannot be mined quickly enough to keep up with current U.S. policy guidelines to transition the country's electricity and vehicle infrastructure to renewable energy, according to a University of Michigan study.

The study examined 120 years of global data from copper mining companies, and calculated how much copper the U.S. electricity infrastructure and fleet of cars would need to upgrade to renewable energy. It found that renewable energy’s copper needs would outstrip what copper mines can produce at the current rate.

The researchers found that between 2018 and 2050, the world will need to mine 115% more copper than has been mined in all of human history up until 2018 just to meet “business as usual.”

I keep hearing that they're being "crammed down our throats" but I've yet to meet anyone who's been a suject to that cramming. Dealers don't even have that many of I did want to buy one. It's almost like people are whining about something that's not a thing.

They stopped selling cars made to run on leaded fuel some 50 years ago and they are still on the road....I'll be dead and buried before you can't drive an ICE vehicle.

To curb tailpipe emissions and boost EV and plug-in hybrid sales, California is working toward banning the purchase of combustion cars. Eleven more US states announced plans to follow suit.
