So they bought a plot of land with the full expectation that eminent domain will be invoked, retained specialist counsel to fight the eminent domain claim, and intent to make the tax payer cover the cost of their hubris.

They should go back to digging holes.

Yeah, pretty much. Is that a problem? There seems to be a lot of issues here for consideration. Immigration, property rights, rights in general, fair market price, activism. I'm interested to know how many folks support the seizure of personal property by the feds... in this instance.

I'm generally not a big fan of eminent domain as it tends to allow cronies power to crush individual property owners. However, a nation has a right to maintain its borders. It seems reasonable that there'd be some kind of easement along the border.

I think what this group is doing amounts to virtue-signaling. They're gonna lose. Eventually. And they have to know it. They may get a moonbeam court to rule in their favor. But when it gets appealed up to a saner court, they're gonna lose and they should.

A sovereign nation gets to maintain its borders. Just because you own a plot of land that borders Mexico, doens't mean you get to supersede the border policies of the US government. You don't get to enact your own, personal immigration policy. People who think otherwise are clearly delusional.

(Though I disagree) Kudos for them putting their money where their mouth is...

Unfortunately for them, by virtue signalling that their sole interest and purpose in the land is to block the building of the wall, they have put their imminent domain attorney in a ridiculously weak position... they have almost no protected interest in the land versus imminent domain.

Their only hope is a #Resist judge.

Pretty much. This isn't generational land or something, this was an after the fact attempt at political pressure. If they are lucky they will get their money back.

Hopefully, some person with a kind soul and soft head sells them the property for a "song"... which will establish the "basis" that the government will reimburse for the property. Their attorney's fees will be upon them.

Assuming that the owner will not accept the government's offer to purchase (as demonstrating their objection to the proposed use of the land was their reason for buying it) the court will appoint appraisers to value the land. What the owners paid for it is irrelevant. The value is what similar land has recently sold for within close proximity.

I am against the forced sale of property to the government unless it is absolutely necessary "for the common good"... and there are no alternatives.

Border security fits right into that and there is only one Southern border line, so the gub'ment cannot really buy different property somewhere else. Lol!

Absolutely against taking people's houses to put in a parking lot for a proposed mall... which can be built elsewhere... where there aren't houses.

    H.R.3711 - Legal Workforce Act

At the end of October, this bill passed the House Judiciary Committee and was reported to the House. No vote scheduled yet, but it would basically MANDATE E-Verify for employment. (actually an enhanced E-Verify named EEVS). As many have stated, this is a big step towards turning off the "employment magnet" that draws illegal immigrants to cross our borders or overstay their visas.

When people buy property they know is a candidate for eminent domain for the sole purpose of starting a pissing contest with the government, then as far as I am concerned, they can get thrown under the bus and then have the bus back up and run over them again.
