You are right, Social Security is not an entitlement, because people pay into it their whole working life. It's all the huge number of people who don't pay in but take out that make it an entitlement. The system is Socialism pure and simple, and that's why it's going bankrupt. Socialism never works because eventually there will always be more takers than givers. You can put Medicare and Obamacare in the exact same boat. If the government just let us keep our money that we worked for we would be better off, but the government would not have our money to squander on stupid *hit.

Unfortunately your money was spent a long, long time ago to pay for other people's crap. The money you're being paid is the SS money from, say, my parent's generation and mine at this point. Snake eating its own tail and all that. I hope your wife can get the care she needs: I just wish you could pay for it with the money you earned and invested instead of checks with other people's money being paid back to you without any interest whatsoever!

I know this is a fact. I saw them raiding the fund a long time ago. The system was liquid at one point.
It is impossible to have money sitting in large amounts and not have slickster politico's raid it to serve their purpose. Kind of an "Enron" thing.

Bull. Had our politicians used the money as it was intended it could have worked out. Or had we been able to invest those contributions ourselves it could have worked. But they raided the funds to pay for a mulitude social handouts to many who never paid any taxes. The average worker will never get out what he paid in. Many have died before drawing any benefit. I've worked full time for 40 years. Never been unemployed wouldn't even know how to file for unemployment handouts. Now as I approach retirement I see these kind of comments from younger folks all the time. The system is broken and it needs to be torn down. But when you pay $250,000 to $500,000 into this SS scheme over a lifetime it'd be nice to at least get a thanks and a cup of coffee, because when it all comes crashing down that SS check might only buy a cup of coffee.

    I'll try this again...

The 'shutdown' is there to get us at each other's throats.
All of the media is there (it seems) to drive wedges amongst the 'people'. And it's working!

These arguments out here remind me of my ex-wife and I's arguments about the dumbest most trivial elements of life. And this is no different.

What scares the politicians the most is our getting together, and agreeing upon something... anything. That's what would threaten their Control over us.

Woot smallest government we have had in 17 years..... Nice I smell the savings
    I feel less oppressed already!

The greatest fear that the government f***sticks have over a federal shutdown is that The People might see how well everything goes WITHOUT them.

That's what I said at your age. Guess what? It's still around and I'm 64.
    Are you sure about that?

You are probably one of those people who thinks that as long as there are still checks in the checkbook you still have money.

    But...
how can I drive my car if the government shut down. Doesn't that mean the roads don't work? Gas won't burn in my engine? Traffic lights won't work? My tires won't turn?
how can I eat? My fork won't work? Meat won't cook? I don't even know how I can type this on the internets thingie?

Human sacrifices, dogs and cats living together.....
    mass hysteria

in all seriousness it is getting to the point where "we" have to endure what "they" are going to do to "us" until it all really does shut down. Gov't is completely dysfunctional but for causing damage to the population.

If they hold out long enough and we default, we all may get the SHTF scenario we've all been prepping for. I might convince my wife to let me clean off my amazon list of preps. My logic is if I put it on CC now, I won't have to pay my bills if Uncle Sam can't pay his.... :)
