    Roseanne Barr?
    Valerie Jarrett?
    Donald Trump?
    Barry Obama?
    ABC?

It's like looking into a toilet bowl and asking "Which piece of feces do I want to see sticking around?"....and then hitting flush hoping that one flush is enough.

No Jamil. Close, but I’m not quite describing my thoughts as well as I’d like.

Having grown up in the south in the time that I did, “knowing one’s place” means knowing what parts of town you aren’t welcome in. Or what stores really don’t care for your business if you’re a person of color, or not talking back or speaking up when confronted with overt institutional racism.
It appears to have improved over the years, but it’s still there. I think that improvement has come from people seeing BS and calling it out.
I don’t think improvements are the result of people NOT saying something in the face of overt racism.

Just my position. Not asking you to agree, but I hope I’ve stated it more clearly.

Okay. I took "knowing one's place" completely different then. Some of the biggest disagreements on things are because people don't understand the same words the same way. So I'll say I agree with you more now that you've clarified.

About the South. I've lived in NC, SC, TX, MS. It's been a few years since I've been to NC or SC. They're pretty much still the way you describe it. TX, I haven't been there in probably 30 years. MS, at least the part I lived in for 8 years, was probably the most racially integrated place I ever lived.

. . . Fine, dropping in this thread to comment.

While I do believe Kut has the tendency to stoke discussions that pertain to race...

This particular topic... has nothing to do with him. Kut hasn't baited anything here. Quite the contrary... there are people completely ignoring a blatant racist tweet, trying to excuse it with ignorance and "color-blind" sorts of comments.

Maybe you haven't caught up with the thread. That'd make sense, given how ... inaccurate... your post is with relation to the current conversation going on.

You must have some special access to ALL the tweets and hidden posts that us regular folk just aren't privy to.

I aint felt so ingnoent in yall me life. Poaleese cher wit us. Okay?

Nope, they're all right here, in plain view, in this thread. No less than 5 people now seeking excuses for the tweet Roseanne made... trying to lighten it... make it not racist... feign ignorance.

All right here. Each one as embarrassing as the one before it.

I feel you. I honestly think you are a good person, but I don't you fully grasp the history of this particular "thing." That's why I asked, if Roseanne had called Jarrett, a "coon," would you have found that on an equal footing with "monkey/ape." I'm hoping that reference opens your eyes a bit.

When you fill up a room full of people giving the Nazi salute, yelling "Hail Trump," I doubt I really need to provide statistics to make my point. You simply don't find black people setting up conferences, about establishing a black country, and looking toward Obama to make it happen.

You've been in that room? Seriously? Ain't nobody taking those people seriously. Just like so many black people thought Obama was going to give them something special, the Trumpers who happen also to be racists likely think the same. I don't know what else you could possibly infer from that. Do you think Trump is a secret Klan dude? A literal Nazi? People believe some weird ****.

Surprised no one has put these two photos up. Perhaps helps explain the original Roseanne Barr quote. Not that the liberals care. They’ll spin it however they want.

I'm with Kut and GP on this one. There is just no way the Planet of the Apes reference can be bent, twisted or topologically distorted to be anything other than a racist reference by Roseanne, who knew VJ was of African-American descent

Do you know who David Duke is? If you do, and I'm assuming you don' follow the guy, how long have you known about him?

I looked over all the "offensive" tweets that I could find on this stupidity.
On the surface, I found nothing racist AT ALL. If you want to compare people to monkeys, fine. My kid is a monkey at times. My kid looks like a monkey at times. My kid acts like a monkey [STRIKE]at times[/STRIKE] all the time. If that person that's being compared is black and the intent was racist, oh ya, that's not good and should be dealt with accordingly. Is that what happened? IDK?

Not knowing any background about this lady person, and just by looking a her, why would anyone even think she is black in color at all? They wouldn't. That's why this was so totally confusing to me. I still don't get the connection with those muslin brotherhood dirtbags?? Yes they are, look them up.

I don't know Barr's intent was with said tweet nor do I care. She does not matter. What she says does not matter.

I do think that too many angry people out there are Loaded, Cocked and Ready to be OFFENDED.... just waiting to Shoot at a moments notice at anything around them. That to me is an atrocity that needs to stop if we, as a society, are going to survive.

Those here who think my post is offensive, bag up, I'm not being racist, I'm not being a bully, I have no intentions to be offensive. I just refuse to be a snowflake.
This PC **** has got to stop.

Here's the thing. Let's say, for the sake of argument, that everyone is white. There are no other races. There are just humans. And someone refers to someone as a Monkey. In that context, obviously, there's no racial connotation at all; the reference would likely refer to some physical characteristic, like maybe quick, nimble, or maybe even as an insult, like someone being behind in evolution, or whatever. So in that context there are any number of uses for that which don't have anything to do with race.

But there is a long standing context in which there is a racial connotation. You can read earlier in the thread where BBI explained what that is. You look at Roseanne's tweet, and there's just no reasonable explanation for it. I agree that there is a burgeoning offense industry where people are just waiting to be offended, and certainly they came out today. But, people can go to far. Roseanne did.

That slur implies that blacks are less than human. Maybe in your own experience it's like the fictitious one I described above where you really don't see a context in which the monkey reference can be viewed as racist. But the things she put together makes it pretty obvious.

Are we talking about Duke's praising of Trump early on?

I'm not one to defend Trump unless it's warranted... but guilt-by-association isn't something we regularly dabble with around here, or shouldn't. (I think we also had this conversation back in GenPol... so far back as to me being a part of it.)

No, not at all. I'm not going for the guilt by association angle.
