There was no admission of guilt required even though the prosecutor’s office admitted they believed Smollett did it and there was plenty of evidence to back it up but this deal allows Smollett and his representatives to proclaim his innocence.CWB Chicago is really doing a lot of the legwork on this story. They researched and found 8 recent cases with 1 felony charge each (not 16) and not a single one was handled at all like Smollett. The prosecutor's office claimed Smollet's treatment was because his crimes were non-violent, but none of these 8 cases were violent either. Six resulted in guilty pleas and two are still ongoing a year later.
