A little bit of an update. Search suspended for the 2 missing. Alcohol not believed to be a factor.

"Because of the wind and the waves all three individuals and the boat got separated so they began to drift in the water," said Indiana Conservation Officer Alex Neel.

People in the water are more affected by current.
Boats are more affected by wind.

I'll refrain from a submarine story.

    You're welcome.

Very true. I just can't understand how someone didn't know how to operate the boat to at least help location of those in/went under the water.

Also, 70° water will definitely shock you when you jump in and can more than likely create instant panic when you can't touch ground

I'm reminded of the 2 from IL one year that had cash and headed to Bass Pro. 0 experience but plenty of money.
One guy was dropping his boat backing it down the ramp. Backed it then gunned it dropping it on the ramp quite a few feet before the water. Not only was his boat screwed, he blocked the ramp for everyone else.
The other guy throttled it straight into the sea wall.
Anyone can buy a boat. Doesn't mean you know how to use it.

I taught Boy Scout Lifesaving Merit Badge... for a while.

Remember, that "going in" is your LAST RESORT.

    Order of rescue
    Reach
    Throw
    Row
    Go

Repeat it over and over. Till you say it in your sleep.

Reach: Arm or Leg. Make sure you are anchored, with a low center of balance. You can extend your reach with a towel or clothing, lumber, whatever.

Throw: A line. A life preserver. A "floatie". Etc.

Row: Use a boat. Or a floating log or such.

Go: Finally, last resort.. go. But LEARN how. There's more to it than jump.
had to take a swimming class in high school as part of PE.
The swim coach was famous for "drowning" kids that had to save him in the life saving section, get behind him and apply a "choke" hold was the only way

My June timeline is in. I don't think I'd make it as an over the road trucker.

This is my roadtrip from the past couple of weeks, as mapped out by my SPOT X satellite communicator.

SPOT X did come in handy. It has a dedicated phone number so I can send text messages, but it bounces directly from the unit to a satellite then down to earth again to the recipient's cellphone.

Zero cell signal in large parts of Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Badlands and even along the California coastal regions north of San Fran. Always good to be able to send out a message to family for a nightly check in.
