DON'T TAKE US41 either. . . I was in Schererville and Highland and 41 is a parking lot both ways north of US30. South of US 30 all the way to US 231 41 is slow but moving.

That was due to a two car head on smash... in the middle (suicide) lane of the bridge at Hartsdale right on top of the bridge. Idiots. Who does that?

Dave(grave): I really, really want to get into Archery (it's in my blood. I'm English, French, Scots and Irish with some Jew thrown in there for good measure). If I get myself kitted out with a bow we'll find some land to practice on once one of us knows the ropes :p

In other news... I am at a loose end on Christmas Day (tomorrow) until around 4pm. Is there anything worthwhile (worthy) I can volunteer for? It beats (pardon the pun) sitting around wanking over YouPorn :D

    Kinda.

I'm thinking a soup kitchen or something, but they wouldn't just let someone turn up on the day I bet.

Failing that I'll go drive somewhere secluded and get the radios out and listen to some SATCOM traffic. Oh what a fun life I lead.

I am an admitted idiot when it comes to archery. Its literally been 40 years since I picked up a bow, but I played with my daughter's new equipment yesterday. However, my ignorance has been supplemented by a lot of research for beginners. One of my archery mentors currently holds 3 worlds records, he recommended brand/type of bow. Another of my mentors is my brother in law, who is too modest but is a target shooter. The final mentor is the father of a friend of my daughter who is an avid traditional archer, draws a 100# bow and is in his 70s! All use recurve bows and both consider compound bows to be 'cheater' bows. I've also spent a reasonable amount of time sitting and talking to the guys at the archery shop trying to learn. Clearly I am a newbie with little experience and a bit of knowledge.

As for WHERE to shoot, if you have a back yard you have a place to shoot. Seriously you do not need a lot of space to get started. A good starting distance is going to be about 30 to 40 feet away from the target.

As for WHAT to shoot, you can buy a target bag at Cabelas for $30 (and up) that will stop your arrows.

As for BOWS, you can get a PSE OPTIMA for under $200 at the local shops. The other bow that came highly recommended is the SAMIK SAGE and it can be had for roughly $150. We now have one of each. If you are a well built strong guy, buy it in a 30# draw weight. If you want to take up the sport with your wife, buy it in a 25# draw weight. The LIGHTER THE BETTER is the one thing that seems to be the universal recommendation!!! Both of the above bows are MODULAR and the limbs can be replaced with heavier draw weights. So as your form improves and your strength increases then you can move up in draw weight (typically in 5# increments) by simply replacing the limbs.

As for ARROWS, you can start out with cheap or expensive. I bought some of each. Got some Easton arrows at about $60 a dozen, got some custom carbon fiber arrows at double that price. Not sure there is a real difference for a beginner. Buy the CORRECT ARROW FOR YOUR DRAW WEIGHT. Arrows are sold the same way that ammo is sold. And arrows are designed with different weights, stiffnesses, etc and each is specifically tuned to the draw weight of your bow. If you have a 25# or 30# bow you get arrows designed for that weight range. If you have a 45# or 50# bow then get arrows for that draw weight range.

OTHER STUFF needed would include an arm guard, these protect your arm from the bow string, costs are roughly $8 to $50 depending on make, model, etc. Simple leather or plastic guards with elastic cord on the low end of the price range, semi-custom designs on nicely finished leather at the high end. A quiver to hold your arrows comes in very handy. There are the type that sling over your shoulder and the type that attach to your belt. Take your pick. Prices from about $20 to $250, depending on materials, details, etc. A shooting glove (3 finger glove) rounds out the basics, it protects the 3 fingers you use to hold the string, figure about $10 for one of those.

The logic for a LOW DRAW WEIGHT is very simple. Most of us think we are big strong men. Most of us have an inflated opinion of ourselves. We have little to no skills and think we can self teach ourselves anything. That said, if you start out with a 35# to 50# bow then you are simply going to cause yourself grief. You have no skill and you will be fighting the draw weight. With a traditional bow you are holding the full draw weight while you are trying to line up to the target, that heavy draw weight is working against you and creating fatigue. After working with my daughter's 25# bows yesterday I'd say that I would not want to start with a heavier draw weight for myself. Realize that your first draw weight is one that you may use for 6 months or a year as you work on your skills. This is one reason why the above two bows can be purchased with replaceable limbs. There are many other brands that offer replaceable limbs too. Just start out light and work your way up.

My personal observation after playing yesterday afternoon, during 2 different archery sessions, is that it is harder than it looks! Start out close to the target. I did really well shooting at 30', hitting the target 100% of the time but when I moved back to roughly 50' then my accuracy dropped substantially. Literally 50% of my arrows missed the entire target bag. Clearly I need help!!!

So that is my bit of advice, mostly stolen from those who helped me buy the equipment that no longer sits under the Christmas tree.

River view park in lake station has an archey range. I have not been there but I hear it is really nice. It right off of 80/94 exit 15A RT 51 south just past central on the right/east side of the road. It is in the northeast corner of the park.

Here is what I learned while doing my research. Buy modular, buy light draw weight. I was shopping for a bow for a 17 year old girl who is 5'8" tall and buying a bow is based on several things including HEIGHT of the person using the bow.

But I'm not sure the above 'rule' would apply to a 7 year old? The reason I say that is simple, the bows I looked at for my daughter are suitable for adolescents through full grown adults. A 7 year old is really another animal. The size of a 10 to 13 year old is often double the size/weight of a 7 year old. The size of a 15 year old is typically only modestly larger than a 12/13 year old. The size of a 17 year old is typically only modestly larger than a 15 year old.

There is a school program that has a bow they recommend for schools. Its the National Archery in Schools Program. LINK => https://archeryintheschools.org/activea.asp

What I can tell you that I do know, is that PSE has several bows that are aimed at the youth market. I would strongly suggest you look over the PSE website at their youth bows. Then after you get some information, go to a real archery shop. A good place to go is ON TARGET ARCHERY in Steger, IL (1 block south of Sauk Trail on State Street, about 5 miles west of the IN/IL state line). Non Lake County Red Neck folks please ignore our ugly step cousin's comments there. :D At least if you live in Griffith it's a NO-NO to fire a bow & arrow unless you have a lot of space.

I would imagine the other cities and towns in the "civilized, drug/gang infested war zone" also have a similar ban.

You got to protect the drug-dealer/gang member's right you know. Plus how is the .gov suppose to triangulate your shoot arrow to arrest you. ;)

Is there any spot in the entire town of Griffith that is not within 1000 feet of a building or road? Seriously that is idiotic.

Still, I know of people who shoot bows in their back yards in more urban environs than the backward burg of Griffith, Indiana. Perhaps they are in violation of their city code? Perhaps they just fly under the radar and don't push their luck in other ways.

I realize an arrow will fly beyond the property line, but if you have a privacy fence, set up a modest backstop, and use an arrow stopping target then I can't see how the neighbors would have an issue with archery practice in the back yard . . . regardless of what the law in your town states.

OK, got word back from "the experts" that I rely on for help in all things archery. There are "TOY" bows and there are "REAL" bows. Assuming you want to get your son started in archery with a REAL bow . . .

Here are links to the Samick 'beginner' bows that would help you out, the riser (center portion) is universal and will fit any of the limb lengths. Buy the longest riser you can that is practical for your sone, then adjust the total length of the bow to your son by buying shorter limbs, as he grows get longer limbs and reuse the center riser. The limbs (top and bottom parts) are available in several lengths to accommodate different height shooters, and also available in some very light draw weights to accommodate younger shooters.

Samick Mind 10 Bow => Samick Sports - MIND 10 recurve
Samick Polaris Bow => http://samicksports.com/beginner_polaris.html]Samick Sports - POLARIS recurve

Its very likely this would be a special order bow from any shop. PSE also makes some bows that would likely be suitable too. Again, its also likely they would be special order.
