After getting home your family was grateful to Mr. Grey for helping you. Your youngest just kept thanking him and hugging him about the waist. “Thanks for bringing my Daddy home.” To which Mr. Grey replied, “Sweetheart we all need to help all who we can without risking ourselves. I’m old and need you and your families help as much as I can help you and your family and if we are lucky we will survive.

As Mr. Grey was leaving you were getting your chest wrapped and you nodded to him a signal of thanks which a brotherhood of blood would understand. As he reaches the door your oldest has him wait while the perimeter is checked. As Mr. Grey turns Trisha walks to him, gives him a hug and expresses her gratitude and gives him a kiss on the cheek and an eye to eye thank you. As cold as the man has became in his elder years his heart melted a little as the touch of a woman made him blush.

“It’s clear Mr. Grey” your oldest say and then “Thank you for helping my Dad and all of us.” As she hugs him. Mr. Grey will check in after he gets home on the walkie talkie and check the dogs on the way.

Sorry about the delay, an unscheduled assignment came up, then another, sometimes my job is time demanding..

You have been laying on the couch letting the acetaminophen take some of the swelling down. A cold compress that was put behind your head is now warm. Trish comes in and says that she thinks the power is back on. You give her a nod and she goes to the garage and flips the breakers putting the house back on the grid. As she closes the final few breakers the house comes alive. All the kids start scurrying around flipping off lights etc. The big TV in the living room is turned on. There is a tone and color bars. After you work to reach and grab the remote to turn down the annoying sound the screen goes blue, then a presidential seal.

A voice comes on… Lady’s and Gentlemen a message from the President of the United States..

As you notice the man take the Podium it’s not the president of the United States you remember, he was a man of color. This guy is not..

As the former Vice-President now obviously the President starts into a speech you turn up the volume.

“Ladies and Gentlemen of America, he pauses from the sudden bombardment of flashing cameras. People of the world, I speak to you tonight as the President of the United States due to secession. With a heart full of sorrow I have to inform everyone that President (“worthless”, your oldest interrupts) has been murdered in an unprovoked attack by a force that has yet to declare itself.

Our adversaries forces are in some ways technically superior and have taken out key locations including the pentagon, the white house, most of DC and other vital installations all over the country. From what we can tell they may have attacked our installations all over the world in a global coordinated attack.

These attackers have spread out all over the country in small groups of very powerful land based units. They have methods of hiding that we have not been able to crack. In an effort to minimize the use of our own communications equipment against us, we have shut down all of the civilian communications, radio and TV frequencies. We have started jamming all frequencies with all known methods.

Our intel shows us that these invaders are in some way dependent on our power system with their devices consuming large amounts of energy. Our national power grid has been taken off line to prevent them from leaching power for their weapons, vehicles and camouflage.

In the next few days the power grid will start rolling blackouts with the power being left on for a two to four hour intervals and off for 12 to 20 hours in between. Some grids will not be left on the entire 2 hours and may stay off for days if we know that the enemy is connected to the grid in a specific area.

All power plant and power company employees are asked by myself and all fellow Americans to report for work where you can safely do so. Plant personnel report to your nearest generation facility. Repair and line crews report to your respective yards. If you do not have company ID showing who you are and that you work for a power company do not venture out as you will be detained.

All other personnel who's service is needed for the effort to thwart these aggressors will be contacted directly by representatives of our armed forces.

With a heavy heart and as your Commander in Chief I must announce that The United States of America has declared war against anyone trying to do harm to Americans anywhere we have forces. All American Forces are ordered to report for duty, stand fast, hold your ground and wait for orders. My God bless America and have mercy on our souls.”

As the few reporters who were present tried to ask questions the former Vice President, now President due to secession walked away from the podium. None had their questions answered and the TV went to the tone and bars.

Obviously the government was in control of the TV and Radio..

Minutes later the TV went to the oh familiar tones signifying an incoming message from the local Emergency Broadcast System…

"This is the Emergency Management Agency of Indiana and this is a special announcement for all persons who can hear this transmission. There has been a curfew and travel restriction put in place to protect you from harm. As you have been informed power will be intermittent and you should stay in your current location. Police, Fire and EMS will not be able to assist you at this time. All roads in the area of this broadcast are closed to non-military or non-emergency vehicles so stay where you are or you will be detained. Power will remain on for a very short time prepare for a lengthy outage and rolling black outs. Information will be relayed as it becomes available."

As you motion for the TV to be shut off you instruct Trisha to make sure that as much water as possible is pumped, filling up every jug, pitcher, sink, the tub, the toilet tanks. Let the power pump the system full.. Make sure the water heater is on and do not run any hot water.

You instruct Mary and Thomas to move as much fire wood from the back storage area to the lean to off the back of the garage near the back door to the garage.

Shelly brings you your boots, you put them on and as you stand up with a light head Trisha spouts off as she walks through the room, “we got this, sit your fanny back down” and then she is gone, down to the basement to check things there. You hear the clicking of the washer dial, for a second you think, why would she try to go a load of laundry we might not have power to finish the load. Then it occurs to you, she is filling it with water. Smart girl your wife..

Yes but at this point I don't have the time, this is merely a hobby and for the members of INGO..

If Longbow gets his story published I might consider it.

13:25 Day 5

Your head is throbbing, your knee is sore but that old knee brace you kept “just in case” has came in handy. Neither of these issues are nearly as bad as the busted ribs you know you have. You have been making yourself cough to make sure you don’t have any damage to your lung. Any puncture no matter how small would yield blood or some sort of fluid that you could cough up. So far nothing but pain.

It’s not the first time you have had busted ribs but you have forgotten how much pain they produce. The wrap helps some but you have to be careful.

After the power goes out you realize that you have pumped about 200 gallons of water and heated the water in the water heater and Trisha heated a few pots of water on the electric stove and the girls washed up all of the dishes, everyone washed up with warm water and you need to get cleaned up.

You surmise that Mr. Koontz’s house would have ran it’s heat unit to warm the house, pumped it’s water system full of water and heated it’s water as well. The Dogs will be warmer.

As you check the thermometer suction cupped to the outside of your kitchen window you wonder if it’s correct. It says 38 degrees F. It’s warmer then it was, still cold for this time of the year.

Your wonderful wife walks in to the room and walks up behind you. She asks if your going to sit and listen to the static on the radio or are you in the mood for some reading. “Reading?” you ask. She says well it is Sunday, we haven’t read any from the book.. She calls the children in and everyone sits around as everyone reads a little scripture. After the reading your family joins hands and pray.

As you all AMEN, there is a knock at the door. You look at the family, and with a glance at the door they are all in their places. Trisha hands you the 12 gauge and you go to the door. With a little wince you pull the curtain over your head and pull back the outside curtain to see two men in uniform standing on your porch…

Uh oh it's FEMA coming to take all his supplies and take him and his family to a detention camp for helping the old man that died.
