You come too not realizing where you are.. “What happened?” Is all you can think..

As you try to sit up you can’t. Your body isn’t working.. You go to move your head and look around and you feel immense pain, your head is throbbing, your body is full of pain..

You move your eyes around trying to focus, get your bearings, figure out where you are..

As you try to move the pain floods over you like nothing you have ever felt before. Oh no, your passing out…

You come to with your heart racing, your panicked, you have to calm yourself.. As you take a deep breath and feel all sorts of pain you start to focus your eyes. Looking around all you see is darkness. You look straight up to see where you are but all nothing. You try to make sure your eyes are open, yep they feel open, you move your eyes around, yep they move. Just about the time you start thinking your in purgatory you hear a voice. You thought you had the drop on the intruder. Did you shoot them? Did someone shoot you?

The voice gets louder.. Oddly your ears are ringing, maybe a weapon was discharged and your hearing is still affected.. Your completely puzzled when a figure steps in range of your limited vision.

It’s Mr Grey.. Your heart stops for a second.. He rushes over telling you to stay still. You notice your head is pounding about now, your sight is blurry and you can’t hear very well, everything is muffled.

As he comes close enough to see more clearly his voice becomes more understandable.

Calm down son he exclaims, just lay still a second. As you find yourself thinking of patting yourself feeling for a wound or a bone sticking out somewhere as he explains..

You tried to shoot me you fool.. He explains. You need to calm down he says. Slow your heart down to lower your blood pressure. You know the drill, you have been trained but at this point you weren’t letting your training work for you. As you calm yourself you ask if your ok. Mr. Grey slowly explains what happened. First he thought you were still getting ready to come to the house and that when he relayed the message back to come by and get him that he would “watch your back” but you were not at home. When you didn’t come by he used the walkie talkie to try and contact you. Your wife told him that you had already left and by the time he was able to get ready and gather what he needed to get in here you were already in and the door locked.

“I tried to knock softly” but no one answered Mr. Grey states. “I feared the worst so I picked the front door lock and let myself in. Once I saw the dogs locked on the back porch I thought maybe someone might have already been here and that you might be in trouble.”

I walked in, saw the pantry door open and walked in to see the back door was shut, I opened it to find someone trying to blind me, I saw a pistol pointing at me and I went to kick the door but hit you in the left knee instead. I am sorry son, hold tight. I knocked you off balance as your pistol went off. Thankfully all you hit was a sack of flour.. My ears are still ringing, I am sure yours are too..

You must have been just off balance enough that the door knocked you off your feet and down the stairs. Your laying flat on your back on the basement floor right now and I am not sure your ok so don’t move. Here see if you can hold this flashlight, I think it’s yours anyway, he hands you a light and you softly hold it in your hand while he walks away.

You know the routine and what you need to do. You slowly move your hands, they are ok. The your wrists, then elbow, then shoulders. Ouch you think as your left shoulder has any real pain when you move it.

Your toes, ok, you roll your ankles around, ok but your right knee hurts a little. As you try to lift your legs one at a time you feel a very sharp pain on your left side. Half way up your side you feel with your right hand and luckily it seems to only be a cracked or clean broken rib, nothing compound.. You slowly try to move your neck and finds it is sore, so is the back of your head, you lift your head up a little and notice a nice goose egg has developed on your head.

Not knowing if your back is injured you stop to make sure that you don’t have any numbness in your toes, legs, fingers, hands, arms, etc. Everything is alive and working and it only seems that you have a busted rib or two and you cracked your head bad along with wrenching your knee.

Slowly you move to where you can try and sit up a little. Mr. Grey comes back with a cold rag. “No ice left in the freezer but the water is plenty cold still” As you put the wet rag behind your head and lay back down a bit the throbbing head ache seems lesser since without realizing it the cold made you take a deep breath and your rib injury has came on like gang busters. With the cold rag under your head Mr. Grey says to hold tight and “let me go out and get a little snow” and you notice him shaking his head as he walks out of eye sight.

You don’t believe that you have a back or neck injury but you guess you have at least a cracked rib or two and your knee is sprained and your head has a bad bump and hopefully you only have a slight concussion.

As Mr. Grey comes back with a bowl of snow he takes the rag from behind your head and wraps some snow in it and has you try and sit up and lean against the hot water heater and hold the wet cold rag against your head. As you sit up and wince from the pain of your knee and your ribs you catch a shiver from the cold water running down your neck and down your back.

“I need to get home” you explain, Mr. Grey agrees. “I will help you get home” he states. As you work to stand up you’re a little light headed, slowing your breathing has left your O2 level low and you have to work up to the effort of climbing the stairs and then walking home the short way down the road.

As you collect yourself, locate and re-holster your Ruger, muster up the strength to walk up the stairs Mr. Grey meets you at the back of the pantry with your coat, gloves and scarf.

As you swing your coat on you feel the crackling bone of your rib, it’s at least cracked, one of them anyway.. As you wave to the dogs you ask Mr. Grey to check on their water before you leave. Mr. Grey says they should be fine, he will check them when he returns from taking you home.

Mr. Grey slings your Mossberg muzzle down and helps you get to the front door. You hand him the keys and say lock it up. He did, and you two slowly make your way back to your house and the waiting care of your beautiful Trisha.
