I didn't read all the posts, so I'm not sure if anyone suggested that the little red handle on the automatic opener might be mistaken for a dangling flower by hummingbirds.

Some people paint the handle black to keep them from flying in the garage.

We covered the red handle on ours with tape. We apparently have too many red things in our garage though because they still come in for the creeper, the stool with the red seat and so many other things that are hanging on walls or in the loft storage. The cats appreciate them coming in as they make tasty little snacks apparently. I hear they are very sweet.
