NPR had Robert Jeffress on this morning to discuss the previous night's dinner. (Transcript unavailable at time of posting)

    https://www.npr.org/2018/08/29/642871570/trump-hosts-white-house-dinner-for-evangelical-supporters

He made the outrageous claim that Trump is the most pro-Christian president ever. Huh, I thought that might go to John Adams, but whatever.

The host tried to pin him down on Trump's penchant for porn stars, but he weaseled out by saying Hillary was even more immoral and eventually playing the trump card of "we're all sinners", which we are, but I haven't seen Trump ask for forgiveness...

Can someone tell me what Trump has done to further the cause of Christ? Serious question, because he really couldn't.

    And some levity:

I think Jimmy Carter may have been the best example of Christian leadership, at least in recent years. I'm not sure he really did anything politically to further Christendom, but I think he lived his faith (and still does).

GHWB and GWB would fit that category, too, IMHO.

Indeed. Carter (while an incompetent president) was the first one to capitalize on the "Religious Right." They just realized that they had elected a Christian who didn't actually want to have a public faith (he actually appointed Breyer and RBG to the appellate court).

He is the most vile of them all. Followed closely by Falwell Jr. and Franklin Graham. The only benefit that he has over those two is he doesn't have a famous legacy that he is trashing.

You got to wonder how much head shaking is going on in Nashville (SBC's HQ) when that guy opens his mouth.

Yeah, at least in modern times, I'll go with that.

I'm sure some here will argue that Christendom should be furthered by rule of law, but I'm not so sure anymore.

I think the American experience includes a dedication to the separation of church and state, at least philosophically.

We shouldn't lose sight of your actual question, though: has Trump done anything to further it?

I'll actually defend him on this, to an extent. To a layman, his executive order saying there would be no enforcement of the Johnson Amendment (sorta) really does help. Importantly, even in the absence of an executive order, he's the executive, so he can tell the IRS not to pursue religious entities that speak politically. It could be an order from the executive, without being an Executive Order.

Assuming that it applies across the board to all faith traditions, removing that fear of losing tax exempt status probably does provide a measure of relief. I wouldn't necessarily count on Trump to keep his word on that, and a new administration could change course, but this is still probably a "good" thing.

Other than that... maybe his living of the "wives be submissive to your husbands" thing?

I haven't figured out if this song is about surrendering yourself and worries to Christ or smoking weed....I listened to one of his live sets and he said, "God bless America and may God bless all of you...." If you watch this video the switches on his sound equipment are, USA, XXX, Jesus, 666, etc....He seems to be in conflict or acknowledges the spiritual conflict that is here in our daily lives....

I don't believe in or accept worshiping or venerating moving images. It is an abomination and an innovation.

Mondo Cosmo? That song's been around a year or so. Long enough for me to be familiar with it. :)

Cool song. Most of pop/alt music requires a certain ability to filter lyrics and separate them from all sorts of personal positions.
