I really like my Commander size Para 1911 in Stainless Steel with Cocobolo grips. (PCX745S) It shoots well with a Match Barrel as standard and also has a ramped barrel that I like. I think it cost me around $800 a few years ago. They may not have the identical model today, but something similar would work.

Don't know if you can still find a good used one for under a grand, but one of the finest I ever had was a Dan Wesson commander sized, stainless. Took it to Gunsite for basic pistol and later to FrontSight for four day class. I would put it up against any other I've ever had. The only reason I sold it (for $1000) was that I have an Ed Brown Kobra Carry. The guns are virtually replicas...bobtail and all. Because I had other Browns, I opted to keep the Kobra Carry and sell the Wesson, but they were identical twins except the style of searrations on the slide and checking. Didn't need two just alike. Take a look if you get a chance.

I always wondered about the Ed Browns. Is $1000 a good price for a used one then? How's the trigger?

I found a Sig Nightmare Carry that I'm gonna buy. I know it's a little more but that bobtail is like porn to me. I love the contrast from the black frame and slide to the stainless controls as well.

Since I started this thread I've moved away from the initial choices. I've decided to spend a little more and now it's between the Sig Nightmare Carry and a Springfield LW Champion Operator. The Sig is around $100 more, but that external extractor and oddly cut slide has me at a standstill. I've heard that holsters are difficult to find for it. I know my wife would be happy to see me spend less money, but that's not the point. I've held both and both feel great and are well balanced, but I absolutely love that bobtail on the Sig.

I just brought home a new Springer RO. Yeah, another one. This makes 3. When I inspected it I found the fit/finish/trigger to be near as good as my hot-rodded loaded. If all the new RO's are coming out of the factory with this level of quality forget anything Colt and go look for one of these.

I have a Sig Stainless Carry, 4 1/4" barrel and night sights. Came with 2 8rd mags, but I didn't like the bumper that stuck out the bottom and bought 2 Chip McCormick mags.... love the feel and look of it. I want to say I bought mine around $875.

Scratch that, when I went to buy it was sold out; luckily. When it returned in stock, the price had dropped $70! I snatched it up as fast as I could get my card out. So after transfer fees with free shipping and no tax it was $854. I'll post pics when it comes home. Now, we wait.

I just lay-a-way'd a Kase Reeder "Condition One" - used for under a grand. I'm not a huge 1911 guy but man I'm tickled pink. The gun is practically flawless and it will likely be the nicest 1911 I own for a long while.

Grats on your new 1911 purchase OP. For the record, the S&W E-Series 1911's are hard to beat if you ever want a full size gun.

    1. Sig - mine have always been 100%
    2. Para - can't say mine have always been 100%, but with a little work, they are awesome.
    3. Kimber - never owned one, but have friends that do, seems like they have issues, but like Para, can be made to run!
