    This is a really old Facepalm, but it is new to me so here it is...

    If you look on Google Maps for Mallows Bay, Maryland you can see a large number of sunken wooden cargo ships in the Potomac River. They were purchased by the US government during World War I at a cost of nearly $1 million each, were already obsolete when they were ordered, weren't delivered until after the war was over, never sailed anywhere, and were finally set on fire and sunk in the river in order to cease paying the storage costs. During WWII the government paid even more money in a failed attempt to salvage the metal fittings from them. More recent years have seen money spent cleaning the site up and studying the ecological effects of the remains.
