I watched Walter Cronkite slant the news in the 1960's. That's been over 40 years.

Agreed. There's no one under age 40 who has ever seen straight, hard news delivered by a live anchor with little to no spin. Americans today have been conditioned to receive their "news" as entertainment. It must be packaged, sensationalized, and measured for what brings the best audience response. I'm not sure Americans are nearly as stupid as the media believes. When you live under a totalitarian regime (MSM) you learn to filter and assess the information they're trying to feed you.

The whole notion of propaganda is dubious. It assumes people are empty vessels waiting to be filled, with no critical thinking abilities.

Especially in the internet era, there are lots of countermeasures for media spin.

Sadly, your comments do indeed accurately describe at least 70% of the American voting public. The average guy out there walking down the street truly is just as stupid (or perhaps uneducated and of marginal intellect would be a more antiseptic description) as the MSM believes him to be. As Rush would say, his mind is just a skull full of mush, yearning to be shaped. He'll accept whatever information he is fed. Package it, put some bells on it, and you own him. That's always been true but it is much more powerful now in the media mecca in which we live today.

Where's the outrage and public outcry from Obama and Sharpton and Jackson over the shooting of four (two murdered) in Durham yesterday? Or the murder in PA of a taxi driver by a guy for a couple of dollars a few days ago? Is it because the shooters were black?

Indeed. There should be presidential concern when any American kills another. Not just because it's 'racial'. If a black person shoots a white person, the President's reaction should be just the same, take to the airwaves and say the victim could have been his son or daughter, or brother or sister.

But they would be stupid whether the media was manipulating them or not. Even before the MSM they were critically-challenged, and subject to any other kind of suasion or manipulation (the media didn't invent this, but they're running with the ball these days).

Indeed it does. If you forget everything you have been fed by the sensationalist media, and just listen to the 911 recording in its entirety, and then read the entire police report, one's view of what happened would be radically different than the packaged nonsense coming from the MSM. At trial, this wouldn't be a difficult case for Zimmerman to win. No prosecutor would want to take it to court in the first place. That's why the Feds are desperately trying to manufacture a "racial slur" in the 911 recording. They want to use it as a way to move it to their ballpark and prosecute. Even so, eventually, once all the media nonsense and liberal activists are moved aside, and this becomes a matter of law to be ajudicated, Zimmerman's position is very strong. I think everyone on all sides understands this. What the activists are trying to do now is figure out a way to manuever around the facts and get a conviction on fluff. To do that, one of the things they must have is the MSM building all of the propaganda they can as quickly as they can. A case tried solely on the available evidence is a winner for Zimmerman every time.
