Not sure why he would do that if he planned on killing even more people when the police would go to his apartment.

I doubt the exits trigger a alarm, they are just the standard fire exits by the screen (probably required by law for occcupant safety), like you see at all theaters. People have been sneaking in those for years to see free movies.

It depends, Most theatres here in Indiana have no alarms on exit doors.
