    In the Army, they stressed the use of the word weapon for your rifle or handgun.
    In the NRA Instructor courses, they stress calling them guns because weapon sounds intimidating to some people.

    From the Military to Police to private organizational training, I've heard a handgun referred to as a Weapon, Firearm and Sidearm. I've heard it all three ways in all three places but weapon seems to be the most common term used.
