Just saw him being questioned about it on tv this morning. When asked why he wouldn't allow the aid into his country when the people so clearly need it, he said, "Because it is a poisonous gift."

Of course it is. The populous (including the military) would toss him right up onto the gallows if another group started to pass out McDonalds, Coca-Cola and Oreos.
And that doesn't even include the Easter candy like Peeps and Reese's Eggs.
Maduro is one of the last dictators of a semi-modern nation. He's not stupid.

    Need an LOL this morning?

Well, I for one am super concerned for the safety of those scarecrows.
Good thing we just need a healthy supply of barbed wire to slow 'em down. Have the quartermaster make a note so we don't forget to pack any...

Looks like this weekend could be the next big standoff. Guaido and the US have a convoy of aid ready to be delivered. Maduro is shutting down borders and calling it an invasion.

(Wonder where he got the idea for that.)

(Well, maybe it is in this case.)

Maduro just needs to open the border and enjoy the diversity.
We're only going there to do the jobs Venezuelans won't do.
If they don't let us in their price of bananas is going to skyrocket.

I wonder how long it will take before they have "Push one for spanish, push 2 for english" prompts on all of their phone calls?

Internal violence has already broken out. A local tribe and the VNG just had outright conflict/bloodshed. During the fracas, the tribe managed to capture the General of the VNG for Bolivar State. More violence in the coming days is an almost certainty.

Also, pretty much every respectable nation in the world says Guaido and not Maduro is the legitimate leader...

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

The fact that a nation has the right to control its borders is so mind-numbingly self evident that I sometimes wonder about the sanity of those who say otherwise.

Indeed, it almost seems like a fallacy to say that people of any authority want open borders. ;)

The issue becomes murky when the lawful representative of the county is in question. The United States and over 50 countries (including most Latin American and European) do not recognize Maduro as the lawful leader. If he is in power illegally then his authority to control the border is also illegal.

By the same token if Guaido is the lawfully elected leader and he does want to open the border, is it not his lawful decision?

I'm not saying either side is completely right or wrong, but the idea of control is based on the unspoken "lawful" control. This then undermines Maduro's ability to control the border of a nation to which he may not have lawful control. The fact that Venezuela appears to be in the beginnings of a so far mostly bloodless civil war muddies the waters.

Why not just send 130s to airdrop the supplies inland from the border (escorted by A10s and F18s, of course)

Edit: Perhaps if the border jumpers were bringing something of value with them (like the 'invaders' of Venezuela are) we might be less likely to brand them invaders. Your analogy is weak

Guaido has not been elected. When Maduro's election was ruled invalid, Guaido was the designated acting head of government from that point on but with a mandate to hold untainted elections ASAP

So are we in agreement that Maduro is not the lawful head of government?

Humanitarian aid trucks crossing into Venezuela 'incinerated,' as protesters clash, military defections

On Saturday evening, Colombian officials said that 285 people had been injured in the day's border confrontations -- 37 of them hospitalized. At least 60 members of the Venezuelan military defected on Saturday, seeking refuge in Colombia, the officials said.

In all, at least 23 members of the Venezuelan Armed Forces fled to Colombia, according to that country's migration agency.
Two trucks carrying humanitarian vehicles were burned on the bridge, according to the migration agency.
