Steve Inskeep on NPR this morning was interviewing Adam Smith, Chair of the House Armed Services Committee, and the "journalist" actually seriously compared what is going on in Venezuela to American politics. Sheesh.

That might be a bit hyperbolic on the journalist's part.

If you can see the leftward swing of several federal politicians, I think it is a fair question. Plus, people from all over the political spectrum here on INGO (which is a pretty narrow slice) ;) admit that USian politics is becoming more divided.

Sure, it may be a matter of degree and/or timing, but there's a valid comparison in there... or could be for purposes of a question.

More divided? Sure. Takes two to tango.
Venezuela-level? Not buyin' it. Not from NPR, anyway.

National Security Adviser John Bolton may have inadvertently revealed a potential next move by the Trump administration in the Venezuela crisis Monday when photographers captured a note on a legal pad that read: "5,000 troops to Colombia."

I've never liked Bolton, despite agreeing with him on a fair number of things.

He has too much of an ivory-tower-conservative feel to him.

Ok, but what threat is Venezuela to the US that justifies sending US troops to Colombia under the NATO umbrella?

The point of NATO is that they only need to be a threat to any one member for it to count the same as a threat to the U.S.

Just an expansion on the Monroe Doctrine.
