Last time I checked the statute for carrying in a school was limited to cops on "official business." But I'm fine with being a hypocrite and carrying where the commonfolk can't and playing the "its ok, I'm a cop" card and not following the law like I expect others to.
Nope, no official business part of the statute, just be a LEO. I think there is one for the IAC regarding casinos and perhaps a couple of other places though. And IMO you wouldn't be a hypocrite for doing it. Now thinking you have a right to carry where most others don't just because your a LEO... Well.....
    IC 35-47-9-1
    Exemptions from chapter
Sec. 1. This chapter does not apply to the following:
    (1) A:
    (A) federal;
    (B) state; or
    (C) local;
    law enforcement officer.
You fail to undrstand my post. I don't have midguided fairness, and from now on I will be unapologetic for taking advantage of my position.

It might be "taking advantage" of it a bit, but not really again IMO. Carrying where it would be illegal for you to do so. And expecting to and getting off it caught because of it would probably be. Or flashing your badge when getting a burger or coffee when your not in uniform. Or speeding just because you can most likely get away with it. I'm not bashing you if you speed, I do it myself. But if you do it just because you can get away with it.

For those that feel Frank should have intervened...

What do you do when the guy tells you to mind your own ****ing business and pulls out his weapon? Use the wife and kids as a shield?
Damn straight I will, how am I supposed to protect them if I'm shot?
Frank, next time you find yourself slumming in Greenwood, let me know. I'll buy you a sodie pop.

    -J-

Same goes if your ever in Monticello, or if I'm down in BG. And I'll even make it the beverage of your choice.

He could have been a cop. Just sayin'.

It's already been mentioned. Frank stated that yes it is possible, but it wasn't any he knew. And IMO it's pretty unlikely. I'm just guessing but I think it would be pretty rare among officers to have full sleeve tats. Most depts. I think have a policy of no visible tats while in uniform. And covering up full sleeves in the summer would be a pain in the ass.

you guys all make me laugh, well, most of you.

There are like 3 constants in the universe:

    1) Gravity
    2) women are crazy
    3) every thread posted on INGO with LEO references (or by an LEO) will turn into a 'cop bashing' thread.

Wow, I have been gone for a week........ Are we ripping on Frank_N_Stein? LOUSY FUZZ!!!!! FLATFOOT! ATTENTION WHORE! Pack that damn gun! What, are you a peace-nic? (I just wanted to get some before he starts busting heads)

Lucky for you I'm on vacation until the 29th, so no busting heads until then.

Frank, next time you find yourself slumming in Greenwood, let me know. I'll buy you a sodie pop.

I'll take you up on that. Hopefully you come through with your offer, unlike some people who I still haven't received a cookie from.

Yeah, and Frank stated up thread (somewhere) that it was possible, but wasn't someone he recognized. Now, by 'recognized' I can't say if he meant personally or by 'the look'.

Just as a point of information, what's the ratio of IMPD with full sleeve tats vs. IMPD with no tats below the elbow? Best guess from our LEO brothers is good enough an answer for me.

If I had to guess I'd say he was military, not police. And there are very few officers on IMPD that have full-sleeve tats. Its not against policy, its just not very common.

Possibly, but he wasn't anyone that I recognized.

    ...

Yes, I work for IMPD. I know which battles to pick, and that wasn't one of them. I don't get involved in anything off-duty, especially when my family is with me and I'm not carrying a gun.

    ...

He was in the covered walkway between the building and the parking garage so technically he was out of the building, but not yet off the property. I could have said something to him but if he's not doing anything with it and hes on his way out, why confront him? Especially since I wasn't armed. And as far as it being odd about me posting about it, I think there are INGO members that post things more odd than me not jamming up a gun owner that might not be aware of the law.

    ...

I was off-duty and with my family. Maybe next time.

    ...

Again, wasn't on duty so I wasn't going to take police action. And he was on his way out with his family. Maybe if I had encountered him inside the building I would have given him some friendly advice. And like I said before I wasn't bashing him, I was just throwing it out there that it was obvious he was carrying, in case he was an INGO member and happened to read my original post.

Frank, you've restored a little bit of my faith that there are some police officers that understand what it means to be a peace officer as opposed to a law enforcement officer.

I think the risk of saying "excuse me sir, I just wanted to give you a friendly warning that the museum is technically a school because it has a preschool. I just thought you would appreciate knowing" is pretty much non-existent.

You assume facts not in evidence: namely that the person doesn't already know AND that he would care. I'm not big on the knee-jerk MYOB response, but in this case, it is the wisest one.

That is pretty much what I said. I didn't feel I was in any danger doing it. The person thanked me and I was done.
    And all interactions are identical?

I never see you.. how can I give you a cookie if I never see you?

I'm sure we'll run into each other eventually.

Well don't get too faithful, apparently I can't even not do my job correctly. ;)

Well poop. Here I thought I was doing the right thing by not carrying. So much for me being unarmed at the Children's Museum ever again. I don't think I have the right to carry where others don't, but I may have the privilege of doing so.

The only place we can't have tattoos visible is on the neck or face.

Well I'm pretty grateful for the thread, we usually get a membership every fall and there's zero doubt I would have carried right into the museum before seeing the school (if I even saw it) on our next trip. I guess I'm not going to skip taking the kids there because they enjoy it so much, but this is really frustrating. :(

I have a really hard time remembering the parts of the law that don't apply to me, but my understanding is that:

The federal GFSZA law exempts on-duty police officers AND anyone who is licensed by the state to carry; and the state law exempts all law enforcement, regardless whether they're on duty.

    Am I wrong about that?

ETA: Oops, I didn't notice it'd been covered already.

I was mistaken on the "on-duty or official business" requirement.

I didn't think you thought you had the right either. :n00b: Which is why I said IMO it wouldn't be hypocritical for you to do it. Just pointing out that you do have the privilege.

And thanks for the info on the tats. That you know of are most depts the same or what in your opinion is the general guidelines for them?
