I will be there not bring a weapon because I don't have a carry permit yet...my hubby has one...and if asked why I don't have a weapon, I will say I feel so safe right now did not want it to weigh me down.

My understanding is that you can carry a long gun without a permit.

We will be within 1000' of a daycare that is (required to be) licensed per IC. Therefore, we will be in a GFZ unless properly licensed (this applies to long guns as well unfortunately)

GFSZA states "firearm" and does not distinguish between rifle, and handgun.

The Gun Free School Zones Act of 1990 (18 U.S.C. § 922(q)) states:
(A) It shall be unlawful for any individual knowingly to possess a firearm that has moved in or that otherwise affects interstate or foreign commerce at a place that the individual knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone.
(B) Subparagraph (A) does not apply to the possession of a firearm—
(i) on private property not part of school grounds;
(ii) if the individual possessing the firearm is licensed to do so by the State in which the school zone is located

FWIW, I'm not interested (or knowledgeable enough) to debate the semantics. I do have my LTCH so for me, it's a moot point. I certainly do not want anyone involved to be a test case and see if we can get the definition challenged, especially in light of the reason/cause behind our assembling. In this instance, prudence points to erring on the side of caution.

I simply do not want anyone to inadvertently become a test case and give the anti's something else to publicize and demonize.

I assume the public sidewalk is safe, but I've never seen any formal definition of "campus" or a legal description of the IGC property lines. I know from talking to former prospective clients that the capital police have escorted folks they thought were carrying from the lawn to the sidewalk and asked them not to come back onto the "grounds." That occurred during the anti-Barnes demonstrations.

As stated by others...sidewalks are fine, as I have participated in several rallies. I was stopped by an officer as I was walking up the west side of the statehouse property and was told I could not proceed further north of Robert D Orr Plz, which is Market St. on the east side.
