My girlfriend grew up just across the river from St. Louis on the Illinois side. She just recently bought a revolver and carries here in Indianapolis. I told her she couldn't carry it on her home like in Indiana. She couldn't understand why, I simply said "Chicago decides what the entire state does, and they don't want you to have a gun."

Maybe "carry it on her way home (through IL)"?

She can't carry it at her (parent's) home because it is in Illinois. I'm assuming she is an Indiana resident now.
