If you are in Goshen, very sandy topsoil with gravel below that, very little water holding capacity. Requires a LOT of supplemental water to supply crop plus evaporation ( probably .25 - .3” today ). Need to keep entire root zone moist. Otherwise end up with moisture in top couple inches only. Keeps crop alive but not much more.In my garden anyway, I always felt it just kind of kept it alive, which is good, but you just don't get the growth and harvest.
