I think it's funny that people often say on INGO, "I'm glad we have open carry in Indiana, but I don't think you should do it."

What's the point of having a liberty properly recognized if you're not going to exercise it?

I did not say that you shouldn't do it. I said that I don't, and the reason i don't is because i spent almost 4 years working in the Dallas Texas area and Texas is a Conceal only State. I am used to concealed carry and I don't really care if you carry open or not.

Just as an example, and you can read more here, but there are many more instances of people OCing daily that don't have interactions with LEOs, concerned citizens, ignorant libtards, etc.

I OC 98% of the time I carry. I have yet to be accosted by LEOs, accused of being a murder or a criminal, or had anyone ask me anything more than "Hey, whatcha carrying?"

I don't carry to incite any excitement, and I honestly don't give a flying fornication if people are scared, excited, concerned, or bored sipping their overpriced coffee.

Why would you get arrested because some libtard sees the butt of your gun when you tie your shoe? Unless you're in a place that it's illegal to carry (courthouse, secure part of an airport, school, riverboat casino, jail...) then what can you be arrested for? Let me answer my own question. You can't. There's nothing to be arrested for if you're OCing or CCing and someone "glimpses" your sidearm, unless you're in a location like those I just cited.

More than likely what you're seeing, instead of people "trying to cause problems or be accosted" is only the times when people are, because we want to inform our fellow carriers of the garbage we're suffering when ignorant people foist themselves and their beliefs on us. It's not as common as you think, it's just a better topic to discuss than "I OC'd everywhere I went today and meh, nothing happened. What about you?"

My comment about being arrested for "printing" or someone seeing your weapon was obviously not an issue in the State of Indiana. It was directed at States that are conceal only states. I like the open carry law in Indiana because you don't have to worry about it here. I don't carry open because i don't want to attract attention.
For example, Texas, like most states is a conceal only state. The law in Texas allows you to be prosecuted for "inciting a panic" if someone were to see your weapon and decide to be an A**hole and call the police. I have a friend who had his pistol confiscated by LEO, in Texas, for that very reason.

Slight correction, most states are not conceal only. I believe only 8 states totally forbid OC, and one of those (IL) pretty much forbids all carry.

You'll have to realize that we don't care if Texas and Florida are conceal only. We don't care if the People's Republic of Commiefornia requires unloaded OC only. We don't care if The People"s Republics of Chitcago and D.C. ban weapons.

None of these laws affect us on a daily basis, so when you make comments based on them, they seem really out of place. Welcome to Indiana, where freedom (mostly) lives.

This is not to say that we're happy that those places I mentioned are violating our Constitutional Rights. We want them to change, and we'll help fight for them. But I'm not going to base my carry on some other state's law if I'm not there.

Please don't take my tone as hostile or attacking. I'm not. But this is Indiana Gun Owners.

Actually that is not entirely true of the Firearms Laws in the Fine State of Texas either. ;)

Not to Mention I would love to know under what Authority the LEO used to Confiscate your "friends" Firearm. Those fall into a very narrow list of violations...

I can't believe I've read through 27 pages. This is a great thread & one everyone should read. I CC 99.99% of the time, including last week at the Vigo Co Fair. I'd like to open carry more, but I get nervous when I do it - not sure why though? Anyway, I think the OP handled it great. If I were to ever OC & saw this situation arising, I'd try to grab my Droid X & use the tape recorder app & record the conversation. Good job everyone.

You can't make up that kind of "doe eyed" ignorance!
    :yesway: blonde teenage girls :rockwoot:

Not exactly. You can lawfully be prohibited from carrying in buildings with courtrooms (presuming no residential or business tenants in that same building, in which case you cannot be prohibited from carry in public areas or in the areas used by those tenants) but you are not forbidden by state law to carry in buildings with courtrooms.

Case in point: My wife and I went yesterday to get her LTCH app filed. The building to which we had to go was our local sheriff's office, which is also the county jail, which contains a courtroom for the magistrate. There was no metal detector nor any sign forbidding firearms in the building, though the door through which a couple of people were going to go see the magistrate had adhesive letters on it, each of which looked to be a foot in height, reading "no cell phones". I was lawfully armed and carrying concealed and never had a moment's trouble.

I don't mean to pick nits, I just don't want to have us unintentionally spreading misinformation. It would be an easy mistake, and it could, unfortunately, snowball easily.

    Blessings,
    Bill
Thanks for that Bill. I did the same thing as you did, only I went to the Extension Office, which is in the "Annex Building". It houses the jail, dispatch, Recorder...blah blah....and they have a court room too. I actually didn't even know there was a courtroom until I was leaving and saw a sign that said "Courtroom ^". I'm not sure what it is for. Every time (yes multiple) that I've been to jury duty it was in the "Courthouse" on the "Square".

So by what you said, if it isn't "The Courthouse"(?), and there isn't a sign, then it is legal to carry?

You would have to expect this happening at a county fair. Just carry concealed so you dont ruin your kids day!

Proving a point must be more important than your kids. Well done.

-1 for you. CC rhetoric in an OC thread shame shame. But telling a man how to raise his kids??? I see no better opportunity to teach my kids about their rights and responsibilities as Americans than OCing in public and handling problem encounters in the outstanding way that the OP did. I guess your poor children will be too afraid of ruining their day that they won't be willing to excersize their rights any way they want either.

YEAH! You should expect to be hassled while performing a lawful activity! YEAH! It's the OP's fault YEAH! NOT the Reserve Deputy who didn't know the law YEAH! It's totally ridiculous to show your kids how to stand up for one's principles YEAH!
