Great Lakes Naval Base??? Been 8 years since I have been there I think.
Your old pcs what are they desktops? Laptops?
    Running windows what?
The random turn off could be bad power supply, overheating, ram issues.
Blue screen of death is typically a windows issue.

For inetl chips top of the line right now is
Core i7 followed by core i5 and then core i3

If you want to go viedo editing or play games at max setting go the i7 route.
I5 is still for gaming and video editing but its taxing the system but will do it.
I3 is for budget pc and unless you are just surfing the net, youtubing, office applications you will be disappointed.

What are you gonna do with the pc?
    Gaming
Porn surfing; I mean web surfing
    Video editing
    Watching dvds
    Youtubing?
    Photoshoping?
    Etc..

Just follow Jedi around ... he will lead you to all sorts of exotic, cute, and dangerous women. Stay in the background and when they take him out, you can be Johnny on the spot and administer first aid. You look like a hero. Jedi survives. The girl gets you. Jedi learns a lesson. Everyone wins!

speaking of numbers... someone still never got back to me on a certain physcho

Hang on. I'll PM you Jedi's number.

For $600, do you need a new monitor too? Are you talking pre-built or a parts list to build your own? With a little more info, could help narrow it down more.

It all depends what your planning on doing with it. If just basic word processing, internet surfing I would go with the Intel i3, if you need a more robust system, and lots of multitasking I would go with an i5 since they are quad cores. Unless you are doing a lot of high end video editing I don't see the need for an i7, because they are quad cores that act like they have 8 cores, but most software barely supports quad cores, so unless you have high end software that will take advantage of it, the i7 is overkill. IMHO

& now you see t-star why I hate this phone!!!
    Lol

    Laptop hu?
Well based on what you said i5 or i3 chips will do you good.
Biggest issue is going to be the video card for game playing.
Here are the min system requirements for that game
    https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/diablo-iii-system-requirements

Stay away from acer, dell and compaq/gateway laptops.
    My order of prefernece is
Toshiba, lenovo (ibm), asus, hp, and sony

Don't bother getting the extended warranty from the store.
Square trade is an online company that has much better extended warranties for electronics.

In terms of memory get one with at least 4GB using only 1 memory slot. You can then buy another 4GB from newegg and install it yourself much cheaper (we can do that). 4GB chip from newegg is about $20 - $25. Total of 8GB is good for windows 8.

Hard drive 500GB is middle of the road. You can always get and external so backup your data HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Jedi you like Toshiba... really... I've replaced more dead hard drives in toshiba's than any other brand of laptop... They normally just die too... No Gateways either... thier bad news...

You do know HP and Compaq are the same manufacturer... since they merged..

Sony makes a nice computer but for whatever reason when re-installing the recovery software on a Sony I've had to remove any extra RAM etc... in order for the recovery disk to work on the puter, then added it back after the re-install...
