Its a good thing we ain't a bunch of patient snipers waiting for the perfect shot, we would starve to death first.

While in the kitchen setting up your two burner camp stove you decide to go ahead and put some water on so that you can at least have some coffee. You miss your Mr. Coffee but unless you want to fire up the genny and burn fuel you are left to use the old camp percolator. It still made great tasting coffee but you had to watch it a little more closely or you would get strong and Trisha wouldn’t drink it.

The weather has been fickle but it looks as though high 40’s and rain has set in at least for now. With the rain it’s good that you have things to do inside. If your ribs aren’t feeling too bad and you figure it is a good time to head down into the bunker and see what is still there and what can be done. Trisha brings you a cup of coffee as you determine what it is you will need to get the inventory and some cleaning done in the bunker.

As you go to the garage to gather some rags and a head light and an extra flashlight to leave down there and a battery powered lantern you realize. It’s warm in the garage, so it must be warm in the garden shed.. You have totally forgotten about old man Koontz.

With no way to determine if it is going to get cold you need to start thinking about what to do with his body. You decide to consult Mr. Purple on the 9AM call, after all he is a doctor and he can tell you what would be best. Either way you are sure it won’t be anything easily taken care of.

When you get to the hallway near the bathroom the whole house seems to be stirring and waiting to see if they can get a look into the bunker, all except for Shelly who must still be asleep. You have been the only one down there. You explain to everyone that you will need their help, for now Thomas will accompany you to help move anything to give your ribs a rest.

Mary seems disappointed and stomps off to the kitchen after Trisha reminds her that she has to finish her chores in there before she can take on any more.

As you head into the closet Trisha tells you to be careful and that she will check on you in a minute after she wakes Shelly. You push the "buttons" to get the hidden acess open and then climb into the wall.

Thomas is all excited, and just keeps saying “we have a bunker” which you laugh at the first 20 times he says it then you have to shoosh him.. You know he is a good kid, never really gets into trouble, doesn’t show disrespect very often and has only had to be grounded a couple times since you and Trisha got together.

As you get to the bottom of the ladder Thomas then hands you the lantern and extra flash light. You turn to look around as you flip on the lantern you turn around and Thomas has already made his way down the ladder and is looking around with a flashlight he grabbed from his gear in his room. The boy has taken pretty well to being prepared. Learned to handle and sharpen a pocket knife and unless on the way to, from or at school has at least one in his pocket along with a lighter and other every day carry items you have taught him to carry.

As the lantern casts much more light over a broad area you look for a place to hang it or set it down. Thomas knows what you are looking for and suggests that you set it on the edge of a bench that he has found stuck over under what upstairs is Shelly and Mary’s bedroom and from the ladder is straight ahead and to the right a little.

Everything is messy, nothing like you like things and covered with some dust. You find some old magazines that have fell off a shelf over to the left of the ladder. The shelf holds a few interesting finds. As Thomas stumbles into something that sounds like a metal bucket you turn to the right to see him standing in front of a hatchway. As you start to walk towards him you hear him say very slowly, Trreeyyy…??? As you walk up behind him you startle him when you reply “what is it?” to which he jumps and shines his light right in your eyes.. “Boy how many times do I have to tell you to never shine a light in someone’s eyes?” “Sorry Trey, look at this” he says and points his light towards a hatch just like Mr. Grey and Mr. Red have in their bunkers. An 8 latch hatch that looks to be air and water tight. Without having a window you explain that some checking will have to be done before the hatch is opened. Thomas asks if you think it could be flooded. You explain that as far as you can tell you are standing at least 10-15 feet below the ground near the house, ”You mean we are under the basement?” and you answer “Well maybe, how many steps did you count on the ladder when you came down?” To which Thomas give you that “uh duh, I dunno” look.. You point to the ladder and he knows he should go count them. You use every possible chance to teach the boy something and this would be one of those times where learning how to gauge depth, distance, direction, etc is invaluable even underground but especially when in unfamiliar surroundings..

As he uses his light to count and counts out loud he gets to 14 about the time the light hits his mother straight in the face.. “Thomas!” his mother exclaims to which he says sorry, didn’t see you there.. You giggle and simply state, we are fine honey, we are looking around and might do some cleaning.

Trisha replies with, your cleaning crew really wants to come down and take a look and I have a mug of coffe for you.. You decide that without more light it wouldn’t be easy so you express to her to have everyone come on down with a light but no one is staying as you need to secure some power to be able to get things straight.

As the girls make their way down the ladder you open the right side of a double steel door to the left across the room from the ladder and find more then you expected to..

“Hoonnneeeyyyy,,” you cry out “come take a look” As your almost bowled over by Thomas and the girls everyone gasps as they shine their flashlights all around the room..

When everyone has done their “ah cool, look over there” they realized that everyone could walk into the room. As you looked around the odd looking sealed switch next to the regular switch on the side of the concrete walls. It had a label, BAT1, so you thought what the heck and flipped it, some low voltage battery lights came on and dimly lit up the room.

As everyone stood around looking at all the shelves, racks and cabinets full of supplies you found yourself wondering why that someone didn’t clean it all out before. But then you realized there were at least two semi loads of goods and supplies in this store room. Off to the right there was another set of double steel doors.

Trisha called for you and you found her looking through a metal cabinet with a large red cross on the door. It was full of medical supplies.. She stated that some ER’s might not even have this much stuff as she points to the three other cabinets lined up next to the one she was in. Beyond those were shelves with what looked like masks, boots, gloves and suits along with what looked to be some other NBC items.

Thomas called out, “Trey you might want to come look at this” and as you found him two rows of shelves over in a section with all kinds of canned items you see him pointing to a wire cage.

Could it be, as you got closer you almost laughed. Sitting against the wall in the back of the room was four TA-50 lockers full of gear. Thomas looked at you with that “can I open it” look on his face and with a simple nod he opened the last one and pulled a ballistic helmet and all of a sudden snapped to attention and put the cover on.. As he looked at you with a gleam of admiration and request for approval the lights dimmed then went off. The backup batteries must be dead…

“Ok everyone, lets close up and get upstairs. We will come back and clean the other room and get an inventory of all of these supplies later.” Mary exclaimed that will take us a long time.. Trisha asked her if she had anything better to do and she sort of laughed and said not today..

As everyone went towards the other room and the ladder you stopped to peae out the other double door. You opened the right door and shined your flashlight into the next room and took a quick mental note of what you saw..

Everyone was back up stairs and talking about all the stores that were discovered and you cleared your throat as you walked out of the bathroom, a signal to the family to quiet down and listen. Everyone looked at you and you simply said, “we have to keep our wits and really keep an eye on things. From now on, you kids should never go down there without me or your mom knowing. And until we get some power and better lighting down there no one should go alone.

Mary asks what everyone was wondering.. “Where did all that come from and it’s funny that it has all been down there since we moved in and we didn’t know about it.” You nod and remind everyone to not go down there until it’s clear and checked.

As you motion in a subtle way to speak with Trisha alone she instructs the kids to get back to their chores and get things done. She really could be a drill instructor if she wanted to be, must be from all the years of working with kids..

As the kids went to their chores she followed you to the bedroom. She shut the door and turned and asks you “so what was in the other room?” you seem a little shocked that she noticed you peek in there, you thought she was herding the kids up the ladder.

You take a deep breath and tell her you saw 55 gallon drums with red diamonds and blue poly drums that were spray painted potable and you saw stacks and stacks of crates of what looked to be small arms ammo and a wall of rifles and other weapons.. As her jaw drops you pull her close and give her a hug whispering in her ear, we are set now baby, we have food and supplies for years and what looks like enough fire power to defend it and it seems that this house has some systems which we have yet to discover…

As she hugs you and you both take a deep breath you realize your ribs aren’t back to normal and that all the activity has inflamed your sore ribs.

You decide to lay down for a little while and ask her to wake you up at about quarter till so you can get on the radio call and check about what Mr. Purple says you should do about Mr. Koontz since it is warmer outside. You can tell by her reaction that she too had forgotten about the body in the garden shed.
