You may be right. These do not come off as folks to turn your back on. Low morals make it easy to take chances. Factor in hunger and cold. Not wanting to alter the story line but if they get silly, get the baby and end it. Just saying out loud what others are thinking already. Not the christian way of thinking but Christians would be the last ones to steal his fuel and supply's

There is a website called SHTF school written by a guy who lived in Yugoslavia during the last wars there. He had a post saying that if you traded too much with the same people they would eventually assume you were worth robbing and killing because you had a lot of stuff to trade.

After putting your new acquisition in the garage, on the shelf with your other chain saw and wood equipment you decide to get cleaned up.

As you walk in the house the power comes on. You watch as your family makes all the changes to the things in the house that use grid power. Water pump is flipped on, water heater is flipped on, you ask for them to draw hot water into the bath tub so you can wash up.

Trisha brings you a hot cup of coffee, gives you a kiss and then asks “do you need me to wash your back?” to which you grin and reply “it might be dirty” to which she replies “well we better clean you up then” and she tells you to go get in the bath and she will come in after the rest of the house is setup for grid power and help you wash up...

After your bath and some food you sit with the family to play a game of scrabble with the family to kill time.

I would just figure that a car hit a power pole. The power has gone out suddenly like that before because of that reason. If I became aware that an attack had taken place, I probably wouldn't do anything abnormal. Start talking to the neighbors about it I guess.

Kind of a cross between the book "Patriots" and "One Second After." Good stuff for sure, as it makes us think about the possibilities and options in our own neighborhoods.

After a few rousing games and the power going off everyone decided to turn in. You stoke the fire and throw on another log and lay down to sleep. The wind has picked up and the temperature outside seems to be hovering about 40..

After a good nights sleep you wake up early. Darn birds outside your bedroom window are fighting over nesting space and making an awful racket..

You slide out of your warm bed and away from your lovely wife to jump up and put clothes on and start your day.

First the wood stove, shuffle the coals around, clean out the ashes, stoke the coals and put a log on it. Wash up, brush your teeth, check the perimeter, feed the ankle biter, fire up the generator so you can pump and heat water, lay out some breakfast materials and start making some biscuits.

The power comes back on, you shut down the genny and flip everything to the grid, figures you already ran the genny and burnt fuel, if those dang birds had just let you sleep and the grid could have done it for you.

Oh well at least this way the biscuits will get baked in the oven and not the camp oven.. They turn out better..

You take the opportunity since you have grid power to burn some heating oil and turn your furnace on to warm the house before everyone wakes up.

You check your fuel oil reserve and find it just where you expected it, actually a little higher than normal cause the wood has been keeping the house warm and without grid power you don’t like to run the furnace on the genny even with the lower than normal temperatures..

It's happened often here in the suburbs. I usually use my cell phone to call the utility company. If the lights stay off long I'll start checking in with neighbors to see if all is well and if they need help with anything.

The power goes off almost exactly at 0830 by your watch. Your so glad you bought a watch that is solar and doesn’t have to be wound or have the batteries replaced in. As long as there is sun and it’s not abused it should last longer than you do... The cycling of power is what is keeping the region warm and alive. At least until they start running out of food. In a private discussion with Trisha you decide that trading will be stopped with anyone, especially the Lewis clan.

Today’s task for her and the girls is to inventory the food upstairs and in both the chest freezer in the garage and the fridge freezer. They won’t be checked until the power comes back on and will be done quickly with help.

Thomas is tasked with reloading the staged fire wood near the garage from the back stack and put some small starter logs and splinters in the starter log bin on the back porch. Then stock the ready stack next to that with good clean dry hard wood and a few small soft wood logs.

You decide that your task for the day will be get out and go check on the dogs at Mr. Koontz. As part of the discussion with your lovely better half it was agreed that they should be left there and not brought back to the house. You will figure out some way to keep them in food and water and maybe Mr. Grey can help keep them tended. Your sure there will be a few piles in the screened in porch that will need cleaned up. If the weather turns cold they will need to be brought back to your house to be kept alive or risk them not being gotten to and dying.

The day was long, a lot got done and everyone is tired. One last family prayer with some fresh backed cookies and the last of the real milk fill everyone’s tummies for bed.

    Here and There
This thread has progressed so far from where it began. The "Next 5 minutes" are actually the first 5 minutes out of about 10,000, as of Icarry's last update. Good to see this thread, and the associated story still has some legs.

Again the birds wake you up. It’s warmer today, near 50. But it is raining. You get up to make sure your cistern is collecting all of the water to find you have a substantial level, about 90% full and if it keeps raining today the over flow will start dumping the excess out near the he storm drain at the front of the property. As you look towards the drain you realize that if someone knows what the little 2 inch pipe is that comes out of the slight hill your house sits on near the storm drain they could possibly find a way to run a tube up the pipe and steal your water.. You decide that a prevention method must be devised and installed on the over flow pipe. The incoming lines all go through stainless steel screens that would be near impossible to poke through given it would be a tube or a hose running into them so they are much less a concern.

Today’s tasks, clean, laundry, general house work, and as long as your ribs aren’t flared too bad you decide it is time to check out the rest of the bunker.

There seems to be a commotion outside. You heard yelling, and doors to a vehicle slam shut.. You quickly surmise that it is coming from the North side of your house. You walk back into the living room and peek under the front door curtains. You can only see a little bit of your neighbor to the North’s house. But you see the used conversion van they have drive off and the woman who lives there walk out towards the street in a pair of boxer shorts and a tank top, more like sleep wear rather than outdoor clothing with the temps in the upper 40’s and it raining it isn’t very bright of her. The couple just moved in a few months back, you have made efforts to get to know them but they just aren’t similar enough in thinking, values, etc to be good neighbors with. Trisha had tried to get the lady neighbors 13 year old daughter interested in a dance class at the you and Trisha own but the Mom ended up taking the girl to a different studio which was thought to be sort of an insult. The couple and her three kids live in the house with two dogs and a cat. The house is small, only a three bedroom so the boys had to share a room.

Sammy the soon to be Step Dad as he and Kathy the children’s Mom were engaged was a smooth talking used to be punk from the streets who found whatever and was “working” to be on the right path. He always bragged about his achievements from before he moved to the area, supposedly setting up youth groups and basket ball leagues and such for under privileged kids. Or he goes on and on about how “his” daughter, was molested at school by another student and that the school corporation won’t do anything about the fact that the principal didn’t complete an investigation or really check into the claims at all because the boy is somehow protected from these and other infractions such as bringing a knife to school, having a bag full of aspirin trying to sell them to other students as speed… Or generally he would just bug you by talking non-stop about his new business venture washing and detailing vehicles. “Large or small, we do’em all” was all he kept saying.

As you watch Kathy jog the last few feet to their porch you notice that wearing a white tank top and white plaid boxer shorts in the cold rain is rather revealing and jogging in such attire not something you would think the neighborhood of mostly older folks and families would agree is appropriate.

You figure they must have gotten into an argument about something, probably the fact that Sammy wanted to leave for whatever reason, you know you heard more then one door shut so that means that he has taken one of the kids with him. You immediately think of the kids, hopefully one of them isn’t ill or been hurt. With the travel ban keeping people from the streets it would need to be a medical emergency to warrant being out and about.

As you notice her turn and look around the neighborhood as she walks up the porch steps you can see she has just realized she is not dressed very well and in an effort to regain some modesty crosses her arms to support herself from bouncing while she tromps up the steps and into her house.

As you duck back under the curtain Trisha is standing there half awake wondering what is going on. You fill her in and walk into the kitchen to get things setup for breakfast. Oatmeal and flamed toast unless the power comes back on..
