Installation of a barrel greater than 16 inches in length (SBR) or 18 inches in length (SBS) will remove the firearm from the purview of the NFA provided the registrant does not maintain control over the parts necessary to reconfigure the firearm as a SBR or SBS.

The key here is how ATF defines (or doesn't define) "control". Anyone here want to be the test case? :dunno:

Think you may ever want to take an out-of-state training class? Well then you're gonna have to get special federal "permission" to take that SBR out of Indiana.

Ok, I don't own an SBR yet, mine is "on the way"....whatever that means.

But, just so I am clear, the rule that states that you did not need any special permission to travel to another state as long as your destination state allowed the NFA item is only for AOW's and supressors then? All other NFA items require permission? However, in any of the scenario's you are required to notify if you were actually moving to a different state.

    Am I missing anything? :dunno:

wouldn't "maintain control" mean have it with you?

The way I read it, is if you travel and leave the parts at home, you can't build the SBR while out of State.
