I was under the impression that over $5000 bank deposits triggered some sort of investigation. Wonder why it didn't happen for $28,500?

Incredibly trivial points to argue, almost as silly as arguing the semantics of semiautomatic. The large cash deposit isn't proof they were given financial help for their jihad, but it certainly provides a datapoint to add to the mounting evidence. And, as was mentioned, there is a record of where it came from.
