How long would they? As long as it takes.

    How long could they? -0-

Appointing a justice to the SC is not dependent upon the House of Rep. or, in any real way, on the parts of the govt. shut down.

Is that part of government shut down (Senate). I thought congresscritters made damn sure they were getting paid, no matter what

I'm sure they would try to have it both ways. They'd screech about it not being "fair" since it was shutdown and how Trump pulled a fast one, while at the same time making sure they were paid for working/not working/just existing/etc.

It appears the White House is preparing for Ruthie to walk off into the sunset, or die.

Not sure if this is based on some insider info or just being thorough.

The White House is reaching out to political allies and conservative activist groups to prepare for an ailing Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s possible death or departure from the Supreme Court — an event that would trigger the second bitter confirmation battle of President Donald Trump’s tenure.

The outreach began after Ginsburg, 85, on Monday missed oral arguments at the court for the first time in her 25 years on the bench. The justice, who was nominated to the court by President Bill Clinton in 1993, announced in late December that she underwent a surgical procedure to remove two cancerous growths from her lungs.

The White House "is taking the temperature on possible short-list candidates, reaching out to key stakeholders, and just making sure that people are informed on the process," said a source familiar with those conversations, who spoke on background given the delicate nature of the subject. "They're doing it very quietly, of course, because the idea is not to be opportunistic, but just to be prepared so we aren't caught flat-footed."

To me, it is prudent planning. If Roberts all of a sudden got diagnosed with something like this, they should start planning.

By the way, I wouldn't wish metastasized lung cancer on my worst enemy.

I would think that there would always be a list...but how active the WH is beyond having a list would depend on the situation.

Have a plan, have a back-up plan, have a plan for when those plans both go to hell (paraphrasing Col David Hackworth.) No matter who it is this one will make the Kavanaugh hearings look like a church social. This is for 6-3. Who are we kidding, Buzzi-Ginsburg will be dead before she leaves the bench. Still, have a plan...

If Trump does get another nomination it would be interesting to see who he nominates. After the Kavanaugh hearings and what was considered, initially, a non-controversial figure attracted such push back from the Dems what reason is there for Trump not to pick a more heavily conservative candidate?

Just the thought of that happening made me smile. The sniveling. The whining. The tears. Oh, the shadenfreude. Walking outside to greet a sunrise, take a deep cleansing breath, and listening to the sounds of socialists' heads exploding. Don't tease me.

The dems will snivel, whine, & cry no matter who is picked. Everyone on the planet can see this. Since that's the case, the pick should be whoever he desires in that position regardless if that person is seen as a controversial pick or not. Plans should be made for a good second pick since the first one will be left a shredded mess by the media and the left.

Looking forward to watching the liberal meltdown.

If they went back in time, and transported the younger Ginsburg forward, and nominated her, the left would still be upset.
    Doesn't matter who it is.
If Pres. Trump nominates the person, that's enough for some to be against it.

I don’t wish cancer or death on anyone, but it sure would be great to have Trump replace her with a true constitutionalist judge. The liberal implosion would be so horribly terrific to watch.
