I've just started shooting and I've heard plenty of stories of simple mistakes leading to ugly outcomes. Kind of grisly, but it definitely reinforces the importance of gun safety. Thanks for sharing.

I just read this thread for the first time and boy is it a good reminder for me to double and triple check the weapon to see if it is actually empty. I know there has bee a couple of times I caught myself getting lax while I was handling one of my weapons. Thanks for the posts, it is good to be reminded of safety. Glad to hear that your hand is healing up.

Ouch glad you are better now.

First time I saw this post, so a little curious.

so i flipped up the slide release and racked it pulling the trigger to release the slide

Not sure I understand what you meant by this.

On an XD you have to pull the trigger to remove the slide?

Heal up soon man, Honestly if this happened to me I wouldn't have posted it. I would feel pretty embarrassed but since you did post it I will always check a extra time to see if its loaded. Always gotta look @ the silver lining

From a post made by me earlier in this thread:

    finity said:
The way the XD is field stripped is as follows:

    1. Drop the mag.

    2. Extract the chambered round.

    3. Lock the slide back.

    4. Flip the takedown lever up.

    5. Pull the trigger.

    6. Release the slide (while holding it or it will fly off the end) & slide it off.

From a post made by me earlier in this thread:

I still think they updated the design for the XDM for this reason.

The need to pull the trigger for takedown is a poor design flaw that readily lends itself to bringing unsafe handling to an abrupt end.

I am not in anyway saying the gun causes the issue.
However with one small design change the Springfield XDM has surpassed Glock in the better built mousetrap category.
IMHO it should be adressed by Glock and all other similar designs but probablywill not because of the risk of appearing to admit to a design flaw.

I always thought the Ruger P89 was clunky for having to swing the extractor down into the magwell prior to takedown. Now I see it as an extra level of making sure the gun has a cleared chamber and no magazine during disassembly.

Correct me if I am wrong in regards to the XD. Pulling and releasing the trigger with the slide back does not actually "release" the firing mecanisim. You either must hold the trigger as you release the slide or pull the trigger after you ease the slide back into battery before the slide will remove during takedown.

Glad the hand is healing well.
