When outliers are believed to be rule rather than the exception, it's easy to do a lot of harm trying to fix "systemic" problems which are actually isolated incidents.

....but try convincing people it's not systemic.

It's really difficult for me to believe that this means no law enforcement. Leadership makes laws, police enforce them. What will keep leadership in power if there aren't any people with guns to do the job?

    This is a great point!
There were some factions in the police that have developed an attitude that their authority and power is greater than it is - that they are untouchable. They are probably finding out now that that just isn't true.
There are some factions in government at all levels that have developed an attitude that their authority and power is greater than it is - that they are untouchable. They may need to find out that that just isn't true as well.
The final power rests with the people - all the people - not just the noisy ones.

If these are the best examples they have of injustice, is it any wonder why they continue to fail to gain much traction for their message?

Freddie Gray died of likely self-sustained injuries. Sandra Bland hanged herself. Kaleif Browder committed suicide. Michael Brown died assaulting a police officer. Eric Garner was a walking heart attack waiting to happen. Tamir Rice played stupid games and won a justified, stupid prize, for which his parents should be held at fault. Trayvon Martin died assaulting a private citizen. Philando Castile made a very bad decision while high as a kite.

Did some of those deaths have to happen? Clearly not. Did police needlessly escalate in a few of these situations? Likely (Eric Garner and Philando Castile, at least). But does responsibility for these deaths lie primarily at the feet of the deceased? Undoubtedly.

Want to gain sympathy, empathy, and support for your message? Stop putting the likes of these on a pedestal, and twisting their circumstances to fit your narrative and agenda. Stop ignoring the same number of young, black men who die needlessly on a typical weekend in Chicago as are unjustifiably killed by police across the country in an entire year.

This is it, exactly. For as much as people want to talk about systemic racism, why is it then that there are minorities on police departments? Why are some of them in the highest positions on those departments? Why are there minorities in top positions of government? Elected mayors and Senators and Congressmen and yes, even President at one time. So many minorities have become esteemed doctors and lawyers and philanthropists and multi-millionaires from their own businesses, leaders of enterprise and innovation. How is it that all of these people can succeed in a “systemically racist” country?

In my estimation, based upon numerous examples of success, all arguments ended on November 4, 2008. A black man was elected to the highest office in the land. If that doesn’t say that growth is achievable, then nothing does. Every single American has the choice and ability to achieve what they want to achieve. The above examples prove it. For anyone else who makes excuses to say that the system is holding them down, that’s exactly what they are.

There was systemic racism...I think we all can acknowledge that. Also, there are racists.

However, I wonder if there was not some thought that everything would be sunshine and roses when the systemic racism was beaten back and when life is still harder than you thought it would be...

    ...systemic (hidden) racism.

'Course, this really only applies to angry people, the protester class and the activist class. There are plenty of minorities of all types who are doing quite well.

The real white privilege is knowing that sometimes your neighbor is just an a-hole and sometimes you just don't get that job you wanted because people make bad decisions.

It more than proves it... That guy started off as an actual true to life "African American". First off... despite the widespread misuse of the word, there are very, very few people in this country that actually applies to... but he was one. His worthless POS absent baby daddy was from one of the many crap holes in "Africa", and his mom from "America... He got bounced all over the world, growing up in other crap holes, and still managed to weasel his way into college, get a law degree, become a Senator, then without ever accomplishing anything as either a lawyer or a Senator... become the President... ANYTHING is possible in this land of oppourtunity.

True, that if you're one of the chosen, like obama was, people just hand it to you...

the fact is, your own choices do matter...

With the police in the city out of service temporarily, I wonder how the drug trade will sort itself out, territorial disputes and such. How many killings will we see that come from this? Who will be the perpetrators? Who will be the victims?

With an ineffective police presence they would probably copy the mexican model and then we could have our own drug cartels and all the good stuff that comes along for the ride.

I wonder how much the expanded unemployment checks of $600 per week are adding to this **** fest. They were supposed to stop July 31. I think we'd all be better off if they stopped today.
