What should appear to be agreed upon action against the Islamic State group by Russia and the US, albeit for different reasons, is now the conundrum of what will happen when an F-16 meets a MiG.

The MiG-31? Not really a problem, if the US aircraft stick to the plan. The idea of a single Falcon going up against a single MiG-31 is not realistic. (Even if it were, my money would still be on the Viper jock.)

Given the integrated air defenses, we would know where the -31s were, what they were doing, and (if they launched) when they launched. (That's even assuming they got off the ground, depending on the scenario.)

It makes for an interesting discussion, kinda like the NFL preseason, but would be no contest in a real fight. The -31 is sorta like a cross between an F-15 and an F-14 with locked wings. It goes really fast, in a straight line, and has a decent radar. Other than that, it doesn't do much.

Revealed: How the five wealthiest Gulf Nations have so far refused to take a single Syrian refugee

Well, they do have the Palestinian refugees as an example of the possible problems for hosting nations. One key argument:
Gulf nations argue that accepting large numbers of Syrian refugees is a serious threat to the safety of its citizens because terrorists could hide themselves among civilians.
When you pay for madrasas that teach one of the more extreme versions of Islam, that is to be expected.

Well thank goodness that the Europeans and the Americans are dumb enough to consider taking them in, then. Seriously, would it kill us to start making efforts to either force these people to play by the same rulebook or just take our millions-per-year taxpayer ball and go home?

It seems to me that they, along with the Chinese, feel like they just have to keep the Tiger asleep a little longer and they won't need to care about our rulebook

Peace is breaking out all over.
Ukraine fighting at lowest level since conflict broke out - BBC News

"We come under two to four attacks a day, this is the lowest number of shootings over the past year-and-a-half," Mr Poltorak told journalists.

Wonder if I should post this in the NFA pic thread. :)

North Korea claimed to have resumed "normal" operations at its main nuclear complex, while threatening to use weapons against the US & others

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest says 'We will not accept North Korea as a nuclear state'

.... Oh? What's so different between Iran and the Norks? They both want us dead... but I guess there's no religious involvement when it comes to North Korea and their threats.

Well, one big difference is that Iran apparently discovered a bunch of uranium ore that it didn't know it had.

    That's a valuable commodity.

I generally don't believe in coincidences.

Russia reopens Tsar Nicholas family murder case - BBC News

The Investigative Committee, a state body, says new checks are needed in order to verify the remains of four other Romanov family members.
The Russian Orthodox Church requested the new investigation in July - despite the fact that the murder case had been closed in 1998.
Some church members remain unconvinced that the buried remains are those of the tsar and his wife. The Romanovs were ousted from power and exiled in 1917, shortly before the communist Bolsheviks overthrew the provisional government.

I'm just not sure how Putin benefits from it.

Putin could pull it off if he wanted. He'd just have to find someone with Royal blood to make the job. European monarchs all essentially share the same blood in one way or another. Czar Nick and Eddie V (England), we Damn near twins.

Surprise DNA test confirms Putin is heir to Russian royals!!

Wasn't exactly sure where to put this one. France has sold the two Mistral carriers that were built for Russia to the Egyptians. That's an odd choice for a sale like this, since Egypt's not exactly known for their naval prowess. I cannot even envision what they will do with these two ships. I guess they could park one off the northern coast of the Sinai and one off the southern and use them as helicopter gunship platforms to go after the IS factions on the peninsula. Just a weird choice for the French to sell them to.

Here's another for the files. Russia is trying to cozy up to Egypt and get a new relationship going with them. They haven't been friendly since the mid 70's and now Putin is trying to get Sisi in bed with them. Looks like there's a new player in the Middle East these days. It will be interesting to see who they choose to get next to next.
