The world has become too small for 18th century style isolationism. But what's with the occupation paradigm? When we retaliated against the barbary pirates, did we occupy tripoli? No. We sent the Navy and Marines to kill people and destroy property and warned them not to give us a reason to return. We could have used the same model for dealing with the taliban and hussein without trying to plants the seeds of western democracy in a place they won't grow. The deterrent value would have been lasting. Ditto for iran. The iranians are opposed to the mullah's autocracy. that regime could probably be toppled by assassinating their leaders in the IRGC and government--and destroying their nuclear weapons program--by using missiles and aircraft which the Saudis and Israelis would be happy to help provide...and then let the Iranians rebuild their society as they see fitTake a look at what "being serious" would actually mean...
Total occupation...for several generations, while providing sufficient economic growth and incentive to offer an attractive alternative for deep-rooted nationalist and tribalist tendancies. On top of that, you have to deal with the corrosive element of the true-believer islamist movement - and it doen't seem quick to let go. What's the alternative...a softer Islam? That could take generations if effected from a grass-roots approach. Top-down enforcement of a different, more western-friendly ideology? Tread lightly here...we're a corner's turn from talking about reeducation camps now.
For what...access to their oil?
I think the best approach is just to starve them out. Sanctions, like the President has previously suggested, interruption or siezure of their international commerce, total naval and air superiority in the region. I don't see any reason to put our boys in harms way on the ground there now...time and distance are on our side. The oil will be there in a couple hundred years if we still want it.
Moreover, that Israeli aid was providing medical treatment to Syrians, whether civilians or combatants. It was humanitarian aid, not military aid--and ISIS wasn't getting anyI just took the time to read thru those links and none of them referenced Israel giving aid to ISIS. They mention aiding Syrian rebel groups for the purpose of keeping ISIS away from their borders. Heck, just about everyone was helping a certain group in Syria. Some of the weapons Obama gave the "moderates" ended up in ISIS hands from what I've read.
Why?
Because our adversaries are literal terrorists.
Target number 2The Associated Press.
I'm going have to question your view on this. Both Iraq and Iran are flooding streets with mourners. The Iraqi parliament has voted (non-binding) to expel foreign troops. The president is talking nonsense about destroying cultural sites, and sanctioning Iraq if troops are expelled. More troops are headed to the Middle East. I think this is playing out better than Iran could have possibly dreamed.

Iran has already threatened the White House and the Rouhani adviser declared yesterday that Tehran's 'sole problem is Trump' rather than the American people - dropping another hint of a direct reprisal against him.
'We have ZERO problems with the American people. We even achieved deals with previous US administrations,' Rouhani's adviser Ashena said on Twitter last night.
'Our sole problem is Trump. In the event of war, it is he who will bear full responsibility.'
One funeral organiser has called on every Iranian to donate money towards an $80million bounty on Trump's head, according to Iranian television.
Among a series of Iranian threats, Soleimani's daughter Zeinab directly threatened an attack on U.S. forces in the region as she spoke to wailing crowds in Tehran.
'The families of U.S. soldiers in the Middle East will spend their days waiting for death.'
Esmail Qaani, who has succeeded Soleimani as commander of the Revolutionary Quards' powerful Quds Force, also swore revenge in an interview with state TV which was aired today.
A former head of Iran's Revolutionary Guards also threatened on Sunday to turn the Israeli cities of Haifa and Tel Aviv 'to dust' if the US attacks targets in Iran.
The head of the Guard's aerospace program, Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, suggested Iran's response wouldn't stop with a single attack.
