Off duty corrections officers attempts to intervene in a robbery. Suspect has automatic conversion and drum magazine, strikes officer's weapon early in the fight likely disabling it. Officer subsequently killed.

    Rafael Wordlaw

Correctional Officer Rafael Wordlaw was shot and killed at about 1:25 am when he intervened in an armed robbery on the 500 block of E 67th Street, in Woodlawn, while he was off duty.

He was sitting in a car at a gas station when an armed subject attempted to rob his friend, who was pumping gas. Officer Wordlaw drew his weapon and attempted to intervene in the robbery. During a subsequent exchange of gunfire Officer Wordlaw was struck in the chest.

The subject was armed with two handguns, one of which had a drum magazine and converted to fully automatic. The offender fired 69 rounds at Officer Wordlaw during the shooting. One of the rounds struck Officer Wordlaw's firearm and disabled it after he fired one round, which struck the subject in the leg. Officer Wordlaw's friend was also wounded.

The man was arrested several hours later at a local hospital while seeking treatment for his gunshot wound. He was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, attempted armed robbery with a firearm, and numerous other felonies. He had recently been released from prison after serving only one year of an eight-year sentence for multiple felony firearms-related charges.

Officer Wordlaw had served with the Cook County Sheriff's Office - Department of Corrections for 4-1/2 years and was assigned to Division 6 of the Cook County Jail. Officer Wordlaw is survived by his father, who served with the Chicago Police Department, and his aunt who raised him.

Employee arrives to work drunk, boss fires him on the spot, drunk employee then repeatedly tries to run over boss. Neighbor with shotgun intervenes and gives drunk ex-employee a dirt nap.

Alternate title, how to take a bad decision, and make it worse. (drunk employee)

Then again. That applies to many in this thread.

Earlier today somebody allegedly cut somebody else off traveling southbound on 281, and both took the exit at Hildebrand and stopped. One driver exited his car with a hammer and started breaking the window in the other car. That car’s driver drew his handgun and shot hammer guy. Hammer guy’s passenger drove hammer guy to hospital where he died.

I have driven 281 many times and have been to that exit/intersection quite a few times as well. Just down Hildebrand to the west are a lot of antique furniture places. 281 goes north/south right through the middle of town, and right by the airport. It is multi lane, lots of curves, and lots of traffic.

Defense against someone breaking into your car while you are in it is specifically called out in Texas law:

    Texas Penal Code Chapter 9
Sec. 9.32. DEADLY FORCE IN DEFENSE OF PERSON. (a) A person is justified in using deadly force against another:
    (“standard” definition of lawful self-defense)
    (b) The actor's belief under Subsection (a)(2) that the deadly force was immediately necessary as described by that subdivision is presumed to be reasonable if the actor:
    (1) knew or had reason to believe that the person against whom the deadly force was used:
    (A) unlawfully and with force entered, or was attempting to enter unlawfully and with force, the actor's occupied habitation, vehicle, or place of business or employment;
    (B) unlawfully and with force removed, or was attempting to remove unlawfully and with force, the actor from the actor's habitation, vehicle, or place of business or employment;

There are some qualifications. You can’t have provoked the confrontation (but verbal provocation only doesn’t qualify), and you can’t be committing a crime greater than a Class C traffic misdemeanor.

Man pulls up behind construction truck, gets out and threatens workers, demands keys to truck. One of the workers pulls pistol and shoots him wounded (as opposed to shoots him dead).

Cops say man was involved in a hit’n’run earlier in the day.

    Cool name.

49yo women with knife confronts residents in front yard over “ongoing issues.”

49yo shoves female against wall and holds knife to her throat. Male with handgun tells her to stop. 49yo approaches him and he shoots her DRT.

Residents cooperate with police (gasp), no arrests.

Cool name, not such a cool place. I've been there, though it was a while back. Right across the Colorado River from Laughlin, NV. Laughlin is not bad, at least walking next to the Colorado river can be nice, or even better is eating at one of the casinos where the dining area is right next to the river.

So it’s on the wrong side of the river…

Amputee (leg? legs?) VN vet wakes up to figure at window slipping a knife under it and raising the window. Vet yells at him to leave and then fires one shot. Intruder runs down the street and dies. Looks like self-defense to the cops.

Love this line from the article:

“With his PTSD, the Vietnam War veteran keeps a weapon close by.“

He keeps a gun because of PTSD? Sure. How about he keeps a gun because the lowlifes who break into your bedroom are allowed to run loose.

Trying to make the PTSD a red flag in the article?

Happy to hear that he did not get into a bind because the guy wasn't actually in his house. Maybe he was a screen repair tech and working late hours.

    Remember this?
    North Carolina
Couple weeks ago an Army Special Forces Colonel sees couple guys on his property near a powerline taking pictures of his children.

Colonel investigates, altercation ensues, Colonel shoots one of them dead. Army CID and local cops investigate.

The two guys have no ID, but do have cell phones with Russian contacts and photographic equipment.

When the cops figure out who they are, they turn out to be two Chechens, who work as contractors for a power company.

So far FBI not involved, except to provide an interpreter.

Article goes on to say that I love and previous complaints of people observing soldiers and families near our bases.

No charges filed against colonel. Ruled self-defense.

No other info on this event.
Deceased’s name is Matthew Steele, but can’t find anything else.

Couple nights ago baby daddy (again!) with history of DV against baby momma tries to make another entry in his DV log via strangulation. Baby momma’s relative shoots him in chest, BD dies at hospital.

Linked story labels shooter as “suspect” but relative remained on scene until police arrived, no arrests so far.

Thought I had already covered this one, but I guess not.

Norbert Mess Jr., 55 yo, was visiting his girlfriend and got into a “fight“ with her. Doesn’t specify if physical or verbal.

GF calls her brother to come “defuse“ the situation. When brother arrives mess is standing outside, holding a wooden rod and brass knuckles. Mess proceeds to beat brother.

GF’s son under the age of 18 comes up with a handgun and points it at Mess. Mess declines to stop beating brother, so son shoots him several times. When police arrive, they find him laying dead in a field next to the road.

Police determine son acted in defense of mother and brother, no charges will be filed against the son.
