I've been watching the lead up to this circus and I am about to puke. They keep putting up some of the most inaccurate statistics about gun crimes. I think I am going to try to tough it out and watch it though. I'll probably clean a couple guns that need cleaned and practice responsible common sense gun ownership.

Not a captive audience, but opinion pieces like that serve a few functions;
1) Clickbait for their regulars readers to get outraged over, while attracting clicks from those on the pro-gun side
2) Facade of representing both sides equally - "Well we publish articles from both sides of the debate". True. But they publish more from one side, and that follows their editorial stance
3) It is an opinion piece. So CNN can publish it and distance themselves because of their very obvious disclaimer at the top
