    You claim to be free of the influences of a church or a pastor - a free thinker and find all your answers in the Bible...
    All of the answers should come from the bible, but we are influenced by others we are around whether it be coworkers or church members.
    Yet, you and your church, all hold the same view, a view that's generally considered a heresy by the vast majority of Christians for do study and take their wisdom from the Bible...
    Either you're wrong about believing in the Bible alone without anyone else's teaching from it, or it's an incredible coincidence that you all hold the same minority view.
    We do not all hold the same views. We hold some of the same core views and are able to meet peaceably and have enough in common to have good relationships. Now if I insisted that everyone think exactly how I think then there would be strife and we couldn't meet in peace.
    If a pastor's (or perhaps your church doesn't have a pastor, but rotating group of men) teaching is irrelevant and pointless, then why is here even bothering to come on Sunday morning?
    We do have a pastor, but we meet on the Sabbath, not Sunday.
    Why do some have the gift of teaching if teaching is unnecessary?
    Teaching IS necessary. Just as in Acts 8:30-31 where Philip asks the Ethiopian “Do you understand what you are reading?” And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?”
    Why have Sunday School is everything is so plain you need schooling?
    I'm not sure what you mean by this, but not everything is plain. You can read the same scripture for years and then finally get a different and deeper understanding of it.
    If the Bible is so plainly obvious, then why don't rest of us understand it as you understand it? :dunno:
    The bible isn't plainly obvious, but it takes reading it and studying it to understand it better. I do not have a complete understanding of the bible, nor do I claim this. So when I make comments in this thread I'm giving my understanding and when someone asks me about something then I explain why I think what I do.
    It's good to be able to explain yourself because this makes you really look at what you believe and make sure that it's in the bible.

    "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy Ghost"

    It doesn't make sense to me to be baptizing in the name of two personages, and an attribute. Especially when the attribute is capitalized.
    Matt 28:19 isn't talking about 3 distinct beings but instead talking about the process of baptism. It is through the Holy Spirit that we can have a relationship with Christ and God the Father. The Holy Spirit is like God dwelling in us, helping guide us. If we go against this guidance then we can't have a good personal relationship because we are going against God.

    "Noel" by J.R.R Tolkien

    Grim was the world and grey last night;
    the moon and stars were fled,
    The hall was dark without song or light,
    The fires were fallen dead.
    The wind in the trees was like to the sea,
    And over the mountain's teeth
    It whistled bitter-cold and free,
    As a sword leapt from it's sheath.

    The lord of snows upreared his head:
    His mantle long and pale
    Upon the bitter blast was spread
    And hung o'er hill and dale.
    The world was blind, the boughs were bent,
    All ways and paths were wild;
    Then the veil of cloud apart was rent,
    And here was born a Child.

    The ancient dome of heaven sheer
    Was pricked with distant light;
    A star came shining white and clear
    Alone above the night.
    In the dale of dark in that hour of birth
    One voice on a sudden sang:
    Then all the bells in Heaven and Earth
    Together at midnight rang.

    Mary sang in the world below;
    They heard her song arise
    O'er mist and over mountain snow
    To the walls of Paradise,
    And the tongue of many bells was stirred in
    Heaven's towers to ring
    When the voice of mortal maid was heard,
    That was mother of Heaven's King.

    Glad is the world and fair this night
    With stars about its head,
    And the hall is filled with laughter and light,
    And fires burning red.
    The bells of Paradise now ring
    With bells of Christendom,
    And Gloria, Gloria we will sing
    That God on earth is come.

    The weekend-before-Christmas readings included a reference that reminded me of the Trinity discussion here (and the Mary discussion, but I won't mention that) ;)
    Luke 1:41-42 said:
    When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb...."

    May the birth of Christ portend faith and mercy for all of us. :)

    Oh my gosh! We played that at our church - I was freaking out at that David Lynchian video.

    That played during the offering and afterwards there was a pause and a tentative, "you are dismissed" from the pastor. He didn't stand he didn't thank anyone for coming... I'm pretty sure he had no idea that was coming.

    Yeah!

    Scary deep, male voice? Check.
    Flaming mountains like Moldor? Check.
    Fiery hand emerging from the dessert? Check.
    Black flowing curtain descending? Check.
    Weird unreadable, glowing text? Check.

    All it was missing was Kyle Mclaughlin and people with glowing blue eyes.

    Matthew 13:44
    The Parable of the Hidden Treasure
    “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field."

    I looked up a commentary about this from John Gill here https://www.biblestudytools.com/commentaries/gills-exposition-of-the-bible/matthew-13-44.html
    and it makes more sense now, though I need to think about this some more.
    For those who don't want to go to the link, John Gill is saying that the field represents the scriptures and the treasure is the Gospel. When the person understood the Gospel he hid it within himself, internalized it, knew the importance of it and held it dear to himself.
    And it seems like the last part is saying that this person doesn't let their possessions keep him from following God through the scriptures.
    I've been wondering about this scripture for a while and I thought I would share what I found about it and hear any of your thoughts on it.
