Post offices are a gray area - one that's not yet been tested in the courts. Most aren't willing to be the Test Case.

You CANNOT leave your firearm in your vehicle while escorting a child to the door unless you park off school property. You MUST remain in control of the vehicle. That is plainly spelled out in the I.C.

    -J-

I carry concealed into the post office when checking my PO Box. I can see absolutely no circumstances, beyond defending my life, where one would know I was armed while carrying concealed. Concealed is concealed.

    There will be

I even looked for signage on the front door....none...I just think police don't like anybody other than police to carry....period.

There will be signage today. In this example, it is not that Police don't want you to carry but the fact that we have a lot of Civilians working in that part of the building and we also house the folks that are not exactly the nicest element in Indianapolis. We also house a large percentage of Mentally challanged folks.
The people that I deal with on a daily basis are much more likely to get upset over some pretty petty things and flip out. Look at it this way. I deal with full grown men and women that when they get pissed off in here will play in their own feces and smear them on the wall. That is just not the normal actions of a mentally stable person.

Ok, after perusing several pages of insults, driving lessons, grammar lessons, etc., nobody has answered the op's question (unless I missed it) so here goes:
Possession of a firearm in a jail is considered trafficking with an inmate. IC 35-44.1-3-5

So basically you're saying that we can't carry there because you don't want us to?

    "...into a penal facility"

Penal facility is not defined in the code so we will go with the closest thing.

""Correctional facility" means a building, a structure, or an improvement for the custody, care, confinement, or treatment of committed persons under IC 11."

The way I interpret this is that you can carry on the grounds of the jail, just not into a building that houses inmates.

I institutions that I frequent do allow in the lobby. Once I pass thru the first door I am required to turn over my cell phone, knife, tobacco and firearm if in my possession.
I am then provided a visitor badge, but not yet thru the second secured door.
Once I pass thru the second door, I am wanded and allowed to
    continue with an escort.

I once offered a piece of candy to my escort and an inmate. I was warned that I could be charged with a Federal Violation had the inmate taken the candy. The Federal charge may have been due to the institution I was at.

When you enter the lobby of the Jail that is the Building that houses the Inmates.

Why did this become "Because I don't want you to?" I could care less where you carry and how but the Rules at the Jail per MY BOSS. is that you can NOT carry into the lobby of the Jail.

Play safe, I'd say no. That last thing you want is to be hassled by an Officer over stepping his "bounds" by a mere inch or two just because he isn't fully aware of the specifications of a law. (Happens more than I want to think about)

It became that because you didn't present any facts as to why it is not allowed. The law has been posted but I believe you simply don't want anyone carrying there, regardless of the law, which I assume you had no knowledge of since you didn't post it.

Your boss has no right to circumvent state preemption, so going off of his word means nothing to the rest of us.

I do not need to quote the law. The OP asked if he could carry into the jail lobby and was told some incorrect info. I got him more info and you turned this on me. The building is marked Marion County Jail therfore is is unlawful for you to carry here. Not sure why you turned this into a personal attack on me but hey it is what is and you are who you are.Have a good Day.

Once again you seem to be confused. The building can be marked Marion County Jail, but if it doesn't house inmates (yes, I know it does) then it is legal to carry there, regardless of what your boss says. It's not a personal attack, I'm just informing you that your boss's rules do not pertain to the rest of us, the IC does. Giving us the IC instead of the "rules" would have been a much better choice.

Personally one of the reasons I carry is to defend myself because the police cannot defend me. In a place where there are plenty of officers with firearms I wouldn't be as concerned with carrying but wouldn't like the inconvenience. The other issue is if your vehicle were to be broken into or if you were attacked between your vehicle and the building.

And it's not about me thinking this just because it is the police. I'd be comfortable not carrying at a carry rally because I would know there were a lot of other armed individuals who would certainly defend me and anybody else if need be.

It was a weird situation, having to go to the jail like I did,and the fact that (supposedly)I was given wrong info.over the phone is sad. I am almost positive I would never be in that situation again. I will go by the entrance and look for this (new) signage though.
