Actually, the rules don't vary by jurisdiction and county, as that would mean we do not have state preemption.

    Well, sort of I guess.

    From the INGO FAQ.

A more specific list of where you can NOT carry:
k-12 schools, property used for school functions
    school buses
    Head Start
    preschools
    private schools
    riverboat casinos
    airport sterile areas
    shipping ports
    State fairgrounds during State Fair
Post office (questionable, as it may not actually be Federal property)
Where prohibited by local ordinance, on gov't property

(Of note, as of July 1, 2011, those local ordinances are mostly voided. You can be prohibited from carrying in any building with a courtroom and no residential or business tenants. You cannot be prohibited from carrying in a state, county, or city government building unless it either has a courtroom or is school property, as long as you have your LTCH.

So it's still kind of gray in some areas.

You CANNOT leave your firearm in your vehicle while escorting a child to the door unless you park off school property. You MUST remain in control of the vehicle. That is plainly spelled out in the I.C.

    -J-

    IC 35-47-9
    Section 3:
    (3) A person who:
    (A) may legally possess a firearm; and
    (B) possesses the firearm in a motor vehicle that is being operated by the person to transport another person to or from a school or a school function.

Not so clear to me because I'm not a lawyer. If I had to argue this, it discriminates against those with young children who need to be escorted to the door, or those who are unable to drive a motor vehicle.

i never said i knew it all. and with that being said i am off to go do something more productive with my time today.

yes. i did take the drivers test and passed. so yes i know the rules of the road just like i know the rules and laws of my CCW. it was the first thing i did before i every started to carry. i made sure to know my state and local laws on carrying my hand gun.

@ N8RV. you maybe right. but still every gun owner should already know the very basic of gun carrying laws.

depends where you go in the jail, I hope you know there is more than one facility, buy you can carry into the lobby of the mail jail if that's as far as you have to go. if you're going any farther they do have a metal detector in the lobby if you're heading to the clerks office etc.. i'd say leave it in the car locked up.

I think that's where there is confusion on this topic. It varies by facility. For example in Harrison County the "Justice Center" is the jail, Corydon Town Police station, Harrison County Sheriff's Department, and the courthouse all in one building. You can't even carry in the lobby there. There is a metal detector at the door and a big sign notifying that you can't bring any weapons into the building.
Since other counties don't have courtrooms in the same building as the jail it is always a good idea to ask before you just show up with your gun.
Personally, I'd leave it locked in my vehicle.

I think the only stupid one here - (There are no stupid questions) is you with your unseemly comment. As to you knowing all the rules of driving, I seriously doubt that you do. I have driven for over 50 years - cars, trucks, semi's and Propane trucks at one time. I see people driving too slow - actually a traffic violation - my cousin PAID a ticket for it. U-turns are legal in some places - not in others. I still see people violating the laws regarding Emergency vehicles. You MUST pull over if possible or STOP if not. There are more laws on the books than any normal person could ever remember. Most are not enforced. The OP asked a simple question, I honestly could not answer without checking the law. And yes I have an LTCH (lifetime) and have had it for several years. I also have an FFL-03 license and have read the entire ATF manual. Please do not be so pompous that you believe you know everything about all the laws concerning handgun carry or driving - you are sure to be brought off your high horse sooner or later.

Its amazing how these posts can veer wildly out of control, because of one teensy little post. Not that im innocent in anyway, with my crappy remarks and off topic discussion. The original poster just came here for a simple answer and look what has happened.

Still***,, makes for good mid day drama

Look at that, wolfy -- you're already up to 20 quality posts. And you've irritated some folks.

I'd say that you'll fit in quite well around these here parts. :D

But seriously, the issue of local ordinances is a curious one. It's bad enough that we can't carry from state-to-state without knowing the laws, but even within our own state the laws can vary by county or city. I just learned a few weeks ago, for example, that I can carry pepper spray in Elkhart County, but if I cross over to St. Joseph County, I'm in trouble. Who knew?

I hope the OP gets a reliable answer. From what this thread demonstrates, NOBODY knows all the laws applicable to carrying in Indiana.

It's not the same with firearms. The only prohibited places are those outlined in the IC and any local ordinance or rule that is not echoed in the IC is void.

As for the OP, this has been discussed at least twice since I have been here and the consensus is that nobody knows where exactly the "secure facility" starts until we get a test case. If you don't want to be that test case I suggest you lock it up.

Hope this helps a little...you could always call ahead and ask.

The last jail I was in (Johnson County), had a sign in the lobby, on a door going into the jail that read "no guns beyond this point"....I took that to mean guns were ok in the lobby, just not ok going into the actual jail portion. This is just what I have noticed, this is not law.

Well, then you would know that it's a License to Carry a Handgun (LTCH) and not a Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) permit.

The OP asked a simple question in a friendly, like-minded gun community. Cut him some slack.
