I have a 629-1 with 6" barrel, and love shooting it. I did change the wooden grips for a set of hogue 1 piece rubbers, and it is even better to shoot. It was well worth the money to me. Here is a pic of my wife shooting it.

Now that we all know your wife shoots a 44 MAGNUM, no guy can complain about the recoil, cause he will feel like a whimp:laugh:

If it shoots like my 6 1/2" S & W you'll love it! I tear a big hole at 25 yards and can keep 6 rounds in an 8" paper plate at 100! That's off a rest with a scope!

You should be feeling guilty for the other guy having 'selling for too less' remorse. At the price you paid it should be easy to remove that distress and torment from your psyche. Have not seen many 629's for less than 700.00.

That's the reason I bought it, cause I thought it was a decent deal;)

I had the 6 1/2" (6? I forget) a few years back. .44 special was actually pleasant to shoot, but the magnum stuff beat the hell out of my hands.

Put pink grips on and gift it to your wife.

    I've had four 629's (4, 6, 8 3/8, and 6).
    They all shot wonderfully.
For all around use, prefer the 4".
    Hunting a 6"
Don't have one at the moment, think that causes a higher level of remorse ;)

Got a 6 inch love it and it was a -1 for 400 mint so I'm spoiled on prices. The 8 3/8 will kill value and it will not seem as powerful when shooting because of its size. The 4 is the way to go.

FWIW 180's on max charges of ball powder in an 8 3/8" aren't bad recoil wise, but many folks find them more annoying (like getting swatted in the face by a cookie sheet) :)

I have an 8-3/9 Model 27 that I use as a back up gun when deer hunting. The barrel length is a little cumbersome but it sure does shoot well. I think you did fine.

Gunman, I just recently aquired a 8 3/8" model 29, FUN GUN, you will have a blast with yours. I also recently purchased a S&W model 57, never shot a .41 magnum, I'm really looking foward to it.

I think you paid a good price. I have a 629-3 with 6" barrel. The previous owner had a trigger job done to it. I love to shoot it. The only problem is I cant afford to shoot it as much as I would like. Welcome to the 629 club.

I have a 629 POWER PORT with a 6 inch barrel, ammo is a little expensive:( I'll compare the kick from the 6 inch POWER PORT to the 8.5 inch barrel, & see which recoil is tamer
